Application of Urea (0.3%) & Ammonium Oxalate (0.3%) for Softening Low Quality Jute.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The hard line cuttings are exclusively used for sacking weft yarns. Treatment of hard cuttings with chemical nutrients has no significant improvement in respect of quality & color over the normal samples. Further trial with other nutrients need to be carried out.

Objectives:

To soften of low grade jute fiber for cost reduction.

Methodology:

200 Kg of hard line cutting were processed with application of 35% emulsion. The constituents of which were 0.3% Urea, 0.3% Ammonium Oxalate, 0.3% Nonidet P-40, 20% JBO & 70.1% water. The processed fibers were left for 5 days to mature. 200 Kg BWC was processed for 25% normal emulsion & left for 48 hours to mature. Cuttings were of all teased and then processed through Hessian Breaker Card, Blending was done in Hessian Finisher Card in the varying number of 3 & 4 rolls of cuttings with long jute. The blended slivers were passed through three drawing stages. Finally to slip draft spinning frame to spin 276 tex (8 lbs/spy. & 345 tex (10 lbs/spy) yarns. The yarns were tested with Tensile strength Tester with gauge length 24 inch.

Achievement/Findings:

Softening of jute & cuttings is a long standing problem for jute industries. Treatment of cuttings/low grade jute with different nutrients have been tried. Positive results will be transferred to the industries. The hard line cuttings are exclusively used for sacking weft yarns. Treatment of hard cuttings with chemical nutrients has no significant improvement in respect of quality & color over the normal samples. Further trial with other nutrients need to be carried out.
