Demonstration of Power Tiller Operation Seeder in Wheat Seeding.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

It has been established that there is yield decrease in wheat if seeding takes place beyond November. Timely establishment of wheat is very important for important and sustaining Rice-wheat productivity. Among the options given thrust, power tiller operated Seeder (PTOS) has been found very effective to improve wheat yields with timely establishment by reducing turn around time to zero-day between T.Aman harvest and wheat establishment.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of PTOS in obtaining and sustaining higher productivity.
To popularize PTOS among farmers and
To Know farmers opinion towards spreading of PTOS.

Methodology:

The activity was begun with Chinese Hand Tractor during 2002-03 Rabi season and is continuing with the wheat variety kanchan. Crop was grown under farmers management. Seeding with PTOS was completed between November 27-30, 2004 in 16 farmers field. Under traditional method, seeding took place in 1st decade of December 2004.

Achievement/Findings:

Due to bad weather, the wheat crop performance was very poor and yielded very low during the year. It was observed during field visits, many farmers were not able to harvest. Grain yield produced under PTOS and conventional practice were 1.09 and 1.05 t/ha respectively were similar. The benefits of PTOS were not exhibited as the crops under both practices were affected badly. Grain yields were found to reduce respectively, by 63 and 54% for PTOS and conventional seeding method compared to 2003-04 wheat yield.
