Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in the laboratory of Spinning, Wet processing, Testing and Physics Department of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute in 2004-2005 to produce good quality blanket.Two ply 7.5lbs/spy of jute (BWB)/Rayon (90:10) blended yarns were chemically modified by treating with 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 30% of caustic soda solutions at room temperature. All the untreated and chemically treated blended yarns were then bleached, dyed, finished and .Physico-mechanical properties of the yarns were determined.It is observed that the values of quality ratio of chemically treated and finished yarns were decreased with the increasing of concentration 10%, 15% and 20% caustic soda solutions but in the cases of treated 25% and 30% caustic soda solution did not followed the above order.

Objectives:

1 To produce the jute and jute Rayon (90:10) blended blankets with required performance.

2.To save the jute industry from this crisis (uses of synthetic fiber), it is necessary to diversify the use of jute fiber for making good quality blanket.

Methodology:

Two plied jute (BWB)/Rayon (90:10) blended yarn of 258 tex 7.5lbs/spy count was spun. Spinning was done by using conventional jute spinning machinery.The plied yarn was then chemically modified with 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 30% of caustic soda solution at room temperature.All the untreated and chemically treated blended yarns were then bleached, dyed and finished. Physic o-mechanical properties of these yarns such as count in tex and lbs/spy, tensile strength , quality ratio, twist per inch and twist per meter were determined.

Achievement/Findings:

It is found that the values of count and twist per meter of chemically treated and finished yarn were increased with the increasing of concentration of caustic soda solution due to longitudinal and lateral shrinkage and greater swelling of ultimate cell of fibers. It is observed that the values of quality ratio of chemically treated and finished yarns were decreased with the increasing of concentration 10%, 15% and 20% caustic soda solutions but in the cases of treated 25% and 30% caustic soda solution did not followed the above order.
