Validation of Zero Tillage Surface Seeding Establishment Method of Boro Rice in Medium Low and Low Land Ecosystem.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objective of this study was to determine as an alternative crop establishment method to reduce the cost of production. The experiment consisted of two methods of establishment, transplanting (TP) and zero tillage surfaces seeding (ZTSS), were sprouted seeds sown in line using drum seeder on to the wet soil without any tillage just after recession of floodwater. ZTSS method gave an average yield of 8.2 t/ha, which was about 1.5 ton higher than TP method.

Location: A trail was conducted in four dispersed farmers field of Gazipur.

Methodology:

The experiment consisted of two methods of establishment, transplanting (TP) and zero tillage surfaces seeding (ZTSS), were sprouted seeds sown in line using drum seeder on to the wet soil without any tillage just after recession of floodwater. In both methods of planting, all amounts of P, K, S & Zn were applied at the time of final land preparation. Nitrogen was applied in three equal splits at 15, 40, & 55 days after transplanting in TP method while in ZTSS it was applied at 20,40,65 & 80 days after sowing.

Achievement/Findings:

ZTSS method gave an average yield of 8.2 t/ha, which was about 1.5 ton higher than TP method. The higher yield in ZTSS was mainly due to higher number of panicle/m² area. Crop under ZTSS method about 8 to 12 days earlier than TP method. Argo-economic analysis showed higher gross margin in ZTSS compared to TP method. The reason to have higher gross margin in ZTSS method was due to less cost in crop establishment method and higher yield compared to TP method. Because of lower cost of production and higher gross margin, ZTSS method may be an alternative option for Boro rice production in medium low and lowland ecosystem.
