Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted during the year 2004 to 2005 at Bangladesh Jute Research Institute Dhaka, Jute Waste Processing Department to study market feasibility test of jute based sanitary napkins. 8,000 jute based sanitary napkins were produced manually and using Socio-Economic feasibility test have already completed. Hygienic types of Sanitary Napkins of lowest absorbing time, permissible values of thermal conductivity, blood holding capacity and static charge growth have been produced from jute.Thus the market feasibility test of jute based sanitary napkins have been successfully completed and all the formalities have been completed for signing MOU with Expo Traders Ltd. for Industrial production and marketing of jute based sanitary napkins.

Objectives:

To produce sanitary pads from chemically modified jute and to study its market feasibility and transfer of Technology.

Methodology:

100kg white BWB jute, chemicals, bandage clothes, absorbent cotton etc.were purchased from market. Chemicals treatments were performed at Wet Processing Department. The samples was treated with caustic soda solution to permissible proportion so that a grater loss in weight and strength could be avoided. The hydrogen per oxide bleaching, softening and sterilization were done to the great extent of satisfaction by maintaining a proper proportion of chemicals,MLR & temperature. The sample was then washed and dried after hydro extraction and carded to produce absorbent cotton substitutes of high absorbency and of hygienic and comfortable nature from jute. About 8000 jute based napkins of a suitable type were produce manually in the Jute Waste Processing Department of Pilot Plant & Processing Division and 36 Medical Stores were selected for market feasibility test in the metropolitan cities of Rajshahi, Narayan Ganj and Dhaka.Market feasibility test of jute based sanitary napkins were collected.

Achievement/Findings:

After two weeks of supplying the sanitary napkins to 36 Medical Stores of the Metropolitan cities of Rajshahi, Narayan Ganj and Dhaka, a rest results were collected. the results showed that a highest demand of jute based sanitary pads in the Metropolitan cities of Rajshahi, medium demand in Narayan Ganj and the lowest demand in the city of Dhaka.The results also showed that besides the normal uses in the menstruation period, this types of napkins could also be safely used in both the post and per-operation cases of gynecological operations. This type of Napkins will be more cost effective in the industrial productions.
