Studies on the Chemical Modification of Jute Fabric with Various Dyes by Cross-linking Technique with Special Emphasis (kinetic Parameter) on Dyeing and Finishing.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted during the year 2004-2005 at Wet Processing Department of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute to study various dyes by cross-linking technique. Jute fabric dry cross linking method (pad-dry-cure)has been carried out with various reactive dyes along with cross linking agents like Fixapret CPN/ECOs, Indosol E-50 powder and Magnesium Chloride catalyst under a suitable condition. The method was optimized. Kinetic parameter was studied. From the foregoing experimental details, results and discussion, it appears that the bleached jute fabrics dyed and finished simultaneous with various dyes and Indosol E-50 powder (sandoz)applying pad-dry-cure method showed excellent performance in respect of all dyeing properties such as dye fixation, colour penetration, uniform dyeing, fastness to washing, rubbing and light, increase crease recovery etc. Fixapret CPN (DMDHEU)also achieved satisfactory results. Fixapret ECOs attained undesirable results. The reason was that it did not react with dyes. So the use of Indosol E-50 powder appears to be commercial application.

Objectives:

To develop and standardize simultaneous dyeing and finishing process technology for jute fabric with various dyes applying cross linking technique

Methodology:

In previous work reported in ATR-2003-2004 pad-dry-cure method has been carried out on bleached CBC applying standard recipes with various selected reactive dyes (Procion type)along with cross linking agents, softening agent and catalysts. This year kinetic of curing and other parameters of the cross-linked dyed fabrics treated with Indosol E-50 powder (DMDHEU)have been studied. In order to determine the optical condition of reaction between crosslinking agent, i.e. Indosol E-50 powder (DMDHEU)precondensate and bleached CBC under catalytic action of magnesium chloride hexahydrate,the variables such as catalyst concentration, precondensate concentration, time and temperature of curing were studied.The cross-linked dyed fabrics were evaluated by determination of kinetic parameters, some physical properties and dimensional changes of the fabrics.

Achievement/Findings:

Effect of catalyst concentration on the precondensate to react with bleached CBC: Without catalyst the percentage of Indosol E-50 powder reacted with the fabric was found to be 50%. While it rose up to 65% with 12g/l catalyst concentration and dropped 1% at 15g/l catalyst concentration under the same condition of time (2 min) , temperature (140⁰C) of resin curing.

Kinetics of Cross-linking: The reaction involved in the process is a first order reaction. The results showed similarity to the order of reaction between Ureaformaldehyde (UF) and Melamine formaldehyde (MF) resin and bleached jute fabrics.The velocity constant was calculated by multiplying the slope of each straight line (Fig.1) by 2.303. The rate determining step for the reactivity of crosslinking agent is the dissociation of carbon-oxygen bond to produce resonance stabilized carbonium ion as discussed.

Tensile strength, Abrasion resistance and bursting strength of fabrics Cross linked with reactive dyes and Indosol E-50 powder,Effect of Precondensate Concentration, Kinetic parameters, tensile strength, Dimensional (Shrinkage/elongation) Stability were determined. The objectives of the present research programme have so far achieved the following developments: High dye fixation, High fastness standard, Produce brilliant shade,improve crease recovery with less of tensile strength without any shrinkage,energy, water & time,Low effluent pollution .
