Inter Specific Hybridization Between Wild and Cultivated Species of Kenaf and Mesta in 2010.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Interspecific hybridizations were made between Hibiscus acetocella x HC-95, Hibiscus radiatus x HC-95, Hibiscus acetocella x HC-2, Hibiscus radiatus x HC-2 and with other wild types to get interspecific hybrid with a view to develop high yielding, high biomass containing product oriented and fine paper pulp producing variety, resistant to nematode, spiral borer and mealy bug, prickle free stem, year round cultivation, stress tolerant (salinity, drought, cold, short day tolerant and waterlogging etc.). One hundred twenty crosses were made between two contrasting characters. Interspecific hybridizations were made between Hibiscus acetocella x HC-95, Hibiscus radiatus x HC-95, Hibiscus acetocella x HC-2, Hibiscus radiatus x HC-2 and with other wild types to get interspecific hybrid with a view to develop high yielding, high biomass containing product oriented and fine paper pulp producing variety, resistant to nematode, spiral borer and mealy bug, prickle free stem, year round cultivation, stress tolerant (salinity, drought, cold, short day tolerant and waterlogging etc.). One hundred twenty crosses were made between two contrasting characters.

Objectives:

To develop high yielding, high biomass containing product oriented and fine paper pulp producing variety.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Greehouse primeses, BJRI, Dhaka during the year 2010. The seeds of parent materials were sown on August-September 2010 having 2 lines of 3m long row. Proper intercultural operation and standard agronomic practices were followed for uniform growth. Interspecific hybridizations were made between Hibiscus acetocella x HC-95, Hibiscus radiatus x HC-95, Hibiscus acetocella x HC-2, Hibiscus radiatus x HC-2 and with other wild types to get interspecific hybrid with a view to develop high yielding, high biomass containing product oriented and fine paper pulp producing variety, resistant to nematode, spiral borer and mealy bug, prickle free stem, year round cultivation, stress tolerant (salinity, drought, cold, short day tolerant and waterlogging etc.). One hundred twenty crosses were made between two contrasting characters. Similarly, interspecific hybridizations were made with Mesta HS-24 x H. altisima, SAMU'93 x 2065 vegetable types with a to develop high yielding, waterlogging tolerant, year round cultivation, disease and pest resistant variety, prickle free stem and bristle free stem and bristle free fruit, short maturing, vegetable type (delicious fleshy calyces and leafy). Eighty crosses were made. Crossing fruits were harvested for studying the next year.

Achievement/Findings:

The result showed that one hundred twenty crosses were made between two contrasting characters in case of Kenaf. On the other hand, eighty crosses were made in case of mesta. Crossing fruits were harvested for studying the next year.
