Characterization of Mesta (hibiscus Sabdariffa) Germplasm in 2004

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Jute Agriculture Experimental Station, Manikganj to characterize of eleven mesta germ plasm collected from different sources were sown on 15 April, 2004 along with the check variety HS-24. The experiment was sown in a mini plot of 3 meter length of 5 rows for each accession. Row to row distance was 30 and plant to plant distance was 5-6 cm in rows. The unit plot size was 3m x 1.2 m for each accession and plot to plot distance was 1 meter. Pigmentation data were collected at 60 days after sowing. Plants were harvested at 120 days after sowing and post harvest data were collected. The accessions were characterized for their morph-agronomic attributes as per Hibiscus descriptor. Based on the major yield contributing characters viz. technical height, leaf angle, leaf length, leaf width, petiole length, node number, base diameter of stem, middle diameter of stem, top diameter of stem, core diameter, dry fiber weight and dry stick weight accessions no. 3901, 4920 and 5096 performed better than the check variety HS-24.

Objectives:

To characterize some of mesta (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) germplasm as per Hibiscus Descriptor for their morpho-agronomic attributes.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Jute Agriculture Experimental Station, Manikganj in 2004. Twenty accessions of kenaf germ plasm collected from different sources along with check variety variety HS-24 were sown on 15 April, 2004. The materials under study were accession 3901, 4398, 4596, 4611, 4613, 4899, 4902, 4906, 4911, 4920 and 5096. The unit plot size for each accession was 5 rows of 3 m length, spacing 30 cm between rows and 5-7 cm between plants and 1 m between plots. Standard cultural practices were followed. Pigmentation data on stem color, leaf color, vain color, petiole color, stipule color, bud color, and fruit color were collected at 60 days after sowing. Plants were harvested at 120 days after sowing and post harvest data on plant height, node number, base diameter of stem, middle diameter of stem, top diameter of stem, core diameter, dry fibre weight and dry stick weight were collected. The data were analyzed following standard statistical procedures.

Achievement/Findings:
