Screening Wheat Genotypes Against Terminal Heat Stress

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fifty advance lines and new wheat varieties were tested under optimum sown and late sown with white transparent poly tunnel cover during grain filling. Among 50 genotypes, 22 had SSI value (both based on yield and TGW) less than unity of which, E1, E2, E3, E5, E9, E20, E21, E26, E36, E 37 and E42 showed high stress tolerance index (STI). These genotypes also showed high value for yield stability index (YSI).

Objectives:

High temperature is one of the major constrains limiting the yield of wheat in the tropics and subtropics where it is grown as a winter season crop. In Bangladesh most of the wheat is grown in late planting condition after harvest of T. Aman rice. As a result the crop suffer from late heat stress particularly during anthesis to grain filling stages which may cause floret abortion and affect grain filling resulting shriveled grain and low kernel weight. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to identify heat tolerant genotype based on several indices suggested by different authors.

Methodology:

Fifty wheat genotypes were sown on optimum (26 November 2012) and late (26 December 2012) planting condition to evaluate and select heat tolerant genotype. Both the trial under optimum and late planting condition was side by side. The trial was conducted in 10 x 5 Alpha lattice design with two replications. Each genotype was sown in 2m long 4 rows with row spacing of 20 cm and 40 cm between entries. To impose more heat during grain filling period, the genotypes were planted under late sown condition. Recommended management practices were followed for normal growth and development of the crop. Data on thousand grain weight (g) and plot yield (g) were taken. Evaluation of heat tolerance through different indices was calculated using the following formula: Stress susceptibility index (SSI)= 1-(ys/yp)/1-(Ys/Yp) (Fischer and Maurer, 1978) Stress tolerance index (STI)= ys*yp/Yp2 (Fernandez, 1992) Yield stability index (YSI)=ys/yp (Bouslama and Schapaugh, 1984) Where, yp is the yield of genotype under optimum condition, ys is the yield of genotype under heat stress condition; Yp and Ys are the mean yields of genotypes under optimum and heat stress condition, respectively. Collected data were analyzed statistically.

The weekly mean air temperature during grain filling period ranged from 21.80 to 25.62⁰C for optimum sowing and 24.31 to 29.74⁰C under late seeding condition.The mean temperature was 2.51⁰C higher in 1st week of anthesis and 4.12⁰C higher in the last week of grain filling under late seeding than optimum seeding. All the tolerance indices showed wide range of variability for the genotypes tested (Table 1.2.1.2). The stress susceptibility index for yield (SSI yld) ranged from 0.21 to 1.86. On the contrary, the SSI value based on thousand grain weight ranged from 0.43 to 1.76 . Among 50 genotypes, 24 had SSI value (both based on yield and TGW) less than unity. The SSI has been widely used by researcher to identify sensitive and tolerant genotypes. Stress tolerance index (STI) can also be used to identify genotypes that produced high yield under both stress and non-stress condition. Out of 50 genotypes, 24 genotypes were selected as tolerant to terminal heat stress based on heat susceptibility indices, and stability index and relative yield under late sown condition. Among those, 10 entries viz. 1, 3, 13, 19, 21, 26, 33, 36, 37, and 42 were found to be more promising for heat tolerance due to low heat susceptibility indices for grain yield (0.21 to 0.92) and 1000-grain weight (0.43 to 0.99). The performance of the selected genotypes will be further verified next year under different growing environment across the country.
