Evaluating Genetic Resources for Physiological Traits

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Sixty selected spring wheat germplasm from Wheat Associating Mapping II (WAMII) trial along with check Variety BARI Gom 26 had been evaluated in the experimental field of RWRC, BARI, Gazipur in the winter season 2012-13 for different physiological traits related to heat tolerance under Irrigated Late Seeding (ILS) condition. Significant variation was observed for most of the traits studied. Considering different phenological and physiological traits 13 genotypes E 17, E 37, E 42, E 44, E 45, E 48, E 49, E 53, E 54, E 55, E 56, E 59 and E 60 entries have been selected. These will be studied under Bangladesh Wheat Screening Nursery (BWSN) in the next season. E 41 and E 47 will be included in Crossing Block (CB) in the next season.

Objectives:

The present study was then undertaken with the following objective(s): •To evaluate wide range of genetic resources and characterize for phenological and physiological parameters •To select the suitable genotypes on the basis of physiological traits

Methodology:

Fifty nine selected genotypes out of 294 from WAMII international trial along with check variety (BARI Gom 26) were included in this experiment. The study was conducted in the experimental field of the Regional Wheat Research Centre, BARI Gazipur in Rabi season 2012-13. Each entry was grown in 2.5m long 3 rows with row spacing of 20 cm keeping 40 cm space between entries. The nursery laid out in alpha-lattice design with 2 replications. 120 kg per hector seeds were sown on December 24, 2012 as Irrigated Late Seeding (ILS) condition. Data were recorded on early ground cover (days), days to heading, CHL content (SPAD reading), canopy temperature at vegetative stage (0C) and canopy temperature at grain filling stage (0C), days to maturity, plant height (cm), spikelet per spike (no), grain per spike (no), biomass per plot (g), 1000 grain weight (g) and grain yield etc. Data were analyzed using Alpha-lattice analytical software package developed by CIMMYT.

Achievement/Findings:

Significant variations were present among the genotypes for most of the traits studied. Although there was no significant variation for grain yield per plot, E 54, E 49 and E 37 out yielded Check (BARI Gom 26) while some other had good potential yield similar to check. High biomass production is a good indicator for stress recovery and good yield potential in late sown heat stress condition. Many of the genotypes showed higher production per plot over the check. Highest biomass per plot was expressed by E 49 followed by E 54. None of the entries had TGW equivalent to or more than Check. Early ground coverage is another good indicator of stress tolerance (eg. heat, drought) All the selected entries as well as many others could overcome check variety for this trait. Only Biomass had significant positive correlation with grain yield. It also had good positive correlation via EGC, spikelets per spike and grain per spike. Biomass was insignificantly but negatively correlated with CT vg and CT gf. EGC and TGW showed insignificant positive correlation with grain yield. CT vg and CT gf had detrimental effect on most of the yield contributing traits. Significant variations were present for most of the traits studied. Early ground cover and 1000 grains weight also had good positive effect on yield while canopy temperature at vegetative stage as well as at grain filling stage was detrimental. Considering different phonological and physiological traits E 17, E 37, E 42, E 44, E 45, E 48, E 49, E 53, E 54, E 55, E 56, E 59 and E 60 = 13 entries have been selected for further study. E 41 and E 47 were included in Crossing Block.
