Development of Breeding Materials of Kenaf Through Intraspecific Hybridization in 2009.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Thirty-five F7 families of different cross combinations of kenaf were raised in the field at JAES, Manikganj and Faridpur regional station during the year 2009 having 2 lines 1.5m long row per cross combination. Variation in plant height, leaf shape, leaf colour, stem pigemnt, flower colour and smoothness were found. Performance of 15 lines of cross combinations i.e. HC-2 X /062, HC-95 X /062, PI-329129 X CPI-72126, HC-2 X PI-319192, HC-95 X CPI-72126, DS/024 X FJ/017, DS/024 X /062, FJ/017 X HC-95, NY/197 X CPI-72126, SM/004 X CPI-72126, HC-2 X /062, HC-95 X PI-319192, HC-2 X CPI-72126, DS/022 X CPI-72126 and FJ/017 X HC-95 were found good in respect of population, growth uniformity, smoothness, plant height and other attributes, DS/024 x FJ/017 NY/197 x CPI-72126, HC-2 X x/062 and FJ/017 X HC-95 were selected from the F7 families in respect of fibre yield, flower colour, growth uniformity and seed yield.

Objectives:

To develop a variety having the potentiality to grow throughout the year to feed paper pulp mills with regular supply of raw materials.

Methodology:

Hybridization helps to create recombinant types by accumulating desirable genes for both quantitative characters from divers plants. Through hybridization, it is therefore, possible to combine the desirable characters and to select superior progeny for variety improvement program. Few germplasm of divers geographic origin were isolated having desirable characters. For these purposes, thirty-five F8 families of different cross combination of kenaf were raised in the field at JAES, Manikganj and Faridpur regional stations during the year 2010 having 2 lines 1.5m long row per cross combinations. Fifteen lines of cross combinations i.e. HC-2X/062, HC-95 X /062, PI-329129 X CPI-72126, HC-2 X PI-319192, HC-95 X CPI-72126, DS/024 X FJ/017, DS/024 X /062, FJ/017 X HC-95, NY/197 X CPI-72126, SM/004 X CPI-72126, HC-2 X /062, HC-95 X PI-319192, HC-2 X CPI-72126, DS/022 X CPI-72126 and FJ/017 X HC-95 were used. Recommended intercultural operations and agronomic practices were done for raising the parental materials.

Achievement/Findings:

Under this study, DS/024 X FJ/017, NY/197 X CPI-72126, HC-2 X x/062, and FJ/017 X HC-95 were selected from the F7 families in respect of fibre yield, flower colour, growth uniformity and seed yield.
