Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out in the laboratory of Testing and Standardization Department,Textile and Physics Department of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute in 1994. The different properties of jute reed of BT SP1 grade viz. bottom, middle and top portion of fiber characteristic properties e.g. fineness by air flow method & microscopic method, bundle strength linear density were determined. Various characteristics of yarn e.g. tensile strength, count, TPI and quality ratio were determined.the fineness of bottom, middle and top portion of fiber measured by Air flow method were found 42.28, 40.26, 36.48 and by microscopic method are 58.33, 45.67, and 39.05 respectively. In both the methods, the top portion fiber is finer than those of bottom and middle fibers and the bottom fibers is coarser than those of middle and top fiber

Objectives:

To produce quality yarn for the development of conventional jute products.

Methodology:

100 kg jute fibres were randomly produce from a paca bale. The samples were divided into three parts such as bottom, middle and top portion. The following characteristic properties of fibres were determine. 1) Bundle strength, 2) Fineness by air flow method, 3) Fineness by microscopic method, 4) Linear density by Gravimetric method. Each part of jute reed was then processed separately and spun into yarn of jute counts 8 lbs/spy and lbs/spy in spinning department. Twenty kg of long jute was also processed separately and spun into yarn of those counts. The yarn characteristic properties such as tensile strength, CV% of tensile strength of different count, twist per inch and quality ratio in percent of these counts of yarn were determined and shown in the table.

Achievement/Findings:

It was found that characteristic properties of fibers and yarns of middle portion of jute is better in comparison with bottom and top portion of jute in respect of bundle strength of fiber, tensile strength and quality ratio of yarn. It is seen that the bundle strength of bottom, middle and top are 10.81, 11.16 and 10.21 lbs/mg respectively and there corresponding quality ratio (mean quality of the yarn of 8 lbs/spy and 10 lbs/spy) are found 124.77, 126.80 and 124.18. Also found that the fineness of bottom, middle and top portion of fiber measured by Air flow method were found 42.28, 40.26, 36.48 and by microscopic method are 58.33, 45.67, and 39.05 respectively. In both the methods, the top portion fiber is finer than those of bottom and middle fibers and the bottom fibers is coarser than those of middle and top fiber.
