Studies on the Fastness Properties of Different Dyestuffs for the Improvement of Fastness Properties of Union Fabric.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This experiment was carried out in the Pilot Plant Division under the Wet Processing Department of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute, Technology Wing, Dhaka during 2009-2011 for the improvement of the fastness of jute blended (jute/cotton) diversified dyed fabric direct dye. direct dye is one of dye which have direct affinity to the cellulose fiber such as cotton, jute, linen, hemp, ramie etc and as well as economical but it's fastness properties is very poor. By applying appropriate after treatment method can improve fastness properties of jute blended dyed fabric. As a result fastness properties of jute dyed fabric will be satisfactory to expend the jute products at low cost price in the local and global market also.

Objectives:

To assess the color fastness properties of jute dyestuffs (reactive and direct) for the improved fastness properties of colored jute goods.

Methodology:

Dyeing with Reactive Dye : Prepared bleached fabric was taken for dyeing with different shade percentage say 2%, 4%, and 6% along with necessary dye assistants- common salt,NaCl(40 gpl); soda ash, Na₂CO₃ (5 gpl) and lissapol (0.2%). The liquor ratio was maintained at 1:20 (o.w.m.) and the temperature was given to 80°C for one hour. Then washed with cold and hot water with soap solution (5 gpl) at 60-70°C for 10 minutes to remove the unfixed dyes from the fabric and at last by cold rinsing dyeing is finished. Then the fabric was dried with stenter machine. Dyeing with Direct Dye: Prepared bleached fabric was dyed with different shade percentage say 2%, 4% and 6% along with necessary dyeing auxiliaries- common salt, Nacl (40 gpl) and lissapol (0.2%, o.w.m.). The liquor ratio was 1:20 (o.w.m.) and the temperature was maintained to 50°C for one hour. Then washed off thoroughly with cold and hot water without any soaping to remove the hydrolyzed dyestuffs from the dyed fabric. At last, dried and finished with stenter machine. Fastness Test: Washing fastness of all dyed samples for both dyes were measured according to ISO method test no.3 by washing with soap (5 gpl) and sodium carbonate (2%, o.w.m.) solution at 60±20°C for 30 minute at M:L ratio 1:50. Rubbing fastness, dry and wet were measured according to ISO 105-x12 method by manual crock meter, rub ten times to and fro movement in 10s, with a downward force of 9N with the dry square 100% cotton rubbing cloth. Fastness to light of different percentage shade for the dyed samples was measured by exposing the samples to direct sunlight for 60 hours according to ISO 105 BO1 method.

Achievement/Findings:

International methods were followed to evaluate the tabulated fastness properties results for the both dyed samples. All results were taken in standard testing atmosphere as mentioned in ISO 139 method. For washing and light fastness assessment by the grey scale, ISO 105 AO2 method was followed where the rubbing fastness was determined according ISO 105 AO3 method by the grey scale assessment. It is observed form the Table-1 and Table-2 that the fastness properties of reactive dyed samples were superior to the direct dyed in all aspects. Hence, reactive dyestuffs are more suitable to get improved/satisfied fastness properties of jute union fabrics to create market potentiality.
