Screening Sugarcane Against Salinity Stress

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Southern part of Bangladesh is salinity stress prone and cultivation of sugarcane crop is hazardous. To increase productivity of crop plants in saline area is an important task for the scientists. Selection of crop variety tolerant to salinity will help to increase productivity as a whole in saline area. Considering the future productivity potential of saline areas, it will be important to conduct experiments to select BSRI bred sugarcane varieties/clones tolerant to salinity stress. Salinity tolerant varieties are Isd 37, Isd 38, Isd 39 & Isd 40

Objectives:

To select clones with superior tolerance to salinity stress.
To find out morphological and physiological basis for salinity tolerance to sugarcane.
To identify parents to use in further crossing programe to develop salinity tolerant varieties.

Methodology:

The BSRI bred clones as well as locally collected clones will be included in the study to be carried out in the following phases: I. Testing under induced salinity stress condition. II. Field-testing. I.TESTING UNDER INDUCED SALINITY STRESS CONDITION: In this case, the test clones /varieties will be grown in plastic pot and subjecting them to artificially made salinity stress .Sugarcane clones of ZYT I, II, III and other selected clones will be compared with known salinity stress tolerant commercial varieties. A separate set of those clones will be maintained as check. II. FIELD TESTING : A field experiment will be set up at Terokhada (Khulna), Bagerhat and Barisal known saline areas with BSRI bred advanced clones of ZYT I, II and III. Two budded sugarcane setts will be planted in furrow. The experiment will be laid out in RCB with at least three replications. Size of unit plot will be 10 x 5 m with one meter row spacing. Normal intercultural practices including land preparation, planting, fertilizer & furadan application, weed control etc will be done as and where required. PROCEDURE : Soils of plastic pots will be treated with different levels of salt concentration (4dS/m, 6dS/m, 8dS/m, 12dS/m). Single-budded setts of different test clones will be planted into plastic pots. Normal intercultural operations including watering, fertilization, weeding etc will be done. Salt will be applied to 50% pots containing plants. The remaining 50% plant will serve as control. In case of field testing two budded setts will be planted to normal salinity prone areas such as Terokhada (Khulna), Bagherhat and Barisal in the month of late October.

Screened and released 4 highly tolerant sugarcane varieties having built-in potential for cultivation in Saline prone areas of Bangladesh Salinity tolerant varieties: Isd 37, Isd 38, Isd 39 & Isd 40. Canes grow in saline prone marginal lands. Rapid growth habit. Environment friendly
