Characterization and Performance Evaluation of White Goat in Some Selected Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A coat colour based sub group of Black Bengal (BB) is white goat. The goats of the group are member of domestic animal biodiversity of the country characterized by solid white coat and is thought to be currently threatened. The present study was aimed at i) exploring habitat, ii) finding out distribution pattern, iii) physical characterization and iv) performance evaluation of the white goat in Sylhet, Mymensingh and Bogra region. A cross section type of data recording has been adopted in the methodology of the project. Data collection on distribution, live weight and body measurements at different ages, milk yield, milk composition, hair character of white and Black goats in underway for comparing white goat with Black ones. From part record analysis, frequency distribution of white goat in the BB population was highest is Sylhet (22%), followed by Mymensingh (14%) and Bogra (10%) respectively. Litter size, however, did not vary between the groups. Measurements on body length and heart girth at 6, 9, 12, 18 and 24 months of age were taken for both groups. Black goats did have significantly longer body length and greater heart girth at certain age than in white goats.
