Fruit Characters of Egg Plant and Their Quantitative Relationships with Infestation by Brinjal Shoot and Fruit Borer, Leucinodes Orbonalis Guenee

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted with twenty brinjal varieties/lines at Plant Pathology Farm Field, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from October 2007 to May 2008 to identify fruit characters of egg plant for susceptibility/resistance against brinjal shoot and fruit borer infestation. The results revealed that different fruit characters of the plant presumably influenced resistance and susceptibility to borer infestation among the varieties/lines. The higher number of fruit plant^-1, the greater fruit length, fruit diameter and weight were found in the varieties/lines Marich begun S, Singnath, Islampuri BADC and Dharola respectively and these variables were lower in Thamba, Dharola and Marich begun S respectively. The infestation rate was found to be negatively correlated with the number of fruit plant^-1 (-0.288) but positively correlated with fruit length (0.159), fruit diameter (0.325) and fruit weight (0.114). The direct effects of number of fruits plant^-1 (-0.121) and fruit weight (-0.124) against fruit infestation caused by brinjal shoot and fruit borer were negative, whereas, the direct effect of fruit length (0.229) and fruit diameter (0.393) were positive and higher in magnitude.

Objectives:

To identify fruit characters of egg plant for susceptibility/resistance against brinjal shoot and fruit borer infestation.

Methodology:

Twenty brinjal varieties/lines were used in this experiment. These were collected from IPM laboratory of Plant Pathology Department, BAU, Mymensingh. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The experimental field (40m x 20m) was divided into three blocks and each block consisted of twenty lines. The experimental plots were fertilized @ 15 ton/ha, 250 kg/ha, 150 kg/ha and 125 kg/ha Cow dung, Urea, Triple Super Phosphate (TSP) and Murate of Potash (MP) respectively. The entire amount of cow dung, TSP, half of Urea and MP were applied at the time of final land preparation. The remaining half of Urea and MP were applied at two equal installments as top dressing at 21 days after transplanting and at the flowering stage. Healthy and uniform sized seedling of 45 days old were taken separately from the seedbed and was transplanted in the experimental plots in the afternoon, maintaining a spacing of 75cm x 60cm between the rows and plants. Different intercultural operations (weeding, gap filling and irrigation) were accomplished for better growth and development of the plants but no insecticides were used. The data were recorded at 80, 100,120 and 140 days after transplantation. Data were collected on number of fruits plant^-1, fruit length (cm), fruit diameter (cm), fruit weight (g) and fruit infestation (%). The data were analyzed by using MSTAT package computer program and mean difference were adjusted with DMRT (Duncan, 1955).

Achievement/Findings:

The average highest number of fruit was recorded in the variety/line Marich begun S (59.72) which was significantly different from that of other varieties/lines. The lowest number of fruit was recorded in the variety Thamba (4.93) that was significantly identical with that of the varieties/lines Dharola, Islampuri BADC, Irribegun, Katabegun and Laffa S. On an average, the highest length, diameter and weight of fruit were recorded in the varieties/lines Singnath (22.89), Islampuri BADC (10.23) and Dharola (395.0) respectively which were significantly different from that of other varieties/lines. On the other hand, the lowest length, diameter and weight of fruit were recorded in the variety Marich begun S (2.96, 1.89 and 14.56 respectively) that was significantly different from that of other varieties/lines. The fruit infestation rate was found to be positively correlated with fruit length (0.159), fruit diameter (0.325) and fruit weight (0.114), whereas, negatively correlated with the number of fruit plant^-1 (-0.288). The direct effects of number of fruits plant^-1against fruit infestation caused by brinjal shoot and fruit borer was negative (-0.121). Its indirect effect via fruit length and fruit diameter was negative and higher than its total positive indirect effect via fruit weight which maximized the correlation coefficient between fruit infestation and fruit number plant^-1to be significant at 5% level. Fruit length had a direct positive effect against fruit infestation (0.229) and its indirect effect via fruit diameter and fruit weight was negative and higher than its positive indirect effect via number of fruits plant^-1which minimized the correlation coefficient between fruit infestation and fruit length to be insignificant and negligible. Fruit diameter had also a positive direct effect against fruit infestation (0.393). Its indirect effect via number of fruit plant^-1and fruit weight was positive and higher than its negative indirect effect via fruit length which maximized the correlation coefficient between fruit diameter and fruit infestation to be significant at 1% level. The direct effect of fruit weight was found negative (-0.124) but its total indirect effect via number of fruit plant^-1, fruit length and fruit diameter was positive that maximized the correlation coefficient between fruit weight and fruit infestation caused by brinjal shoot and fruit borer, though the value is not significant.
