A field experiment was conducted at the field laboratory of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh from July to November 2007 to investigate the effect of time and rate of nitrogen (N) application on seed yield and protein content of transplant aman rice cv. Bbinadhan-7. The experiment comprised of three times of N application viz., N applied in three equal splits at (a) final land preparation or 0 days after transplanting (DAT), 20 and 45 DAT, (b) 10, 30 and 50 DAT and (c) 20, 40 and 60 DAT, and four N levels viz., 0, 40, 80 and 120 kg N ha-1. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications. In case of time of N application, results revealed that plant height, leaf area, number of effective tillers hill-1, number of filled seeds panicle-1, seed and straw yield decreased with delayed N application. The maximum seed yield was observed when N was applied in three equal splits at 0, 20 and 45 DAT due to production of highest number of effective tillers hill-1 (8.71) and seeds panicle-1 (119.8). In contrast, the lowest seed yield was observed when N was applied in three equal splits at 20, 40 and 60 DAT due to production of fewer effective tillers hill-1 (8.05) and seeds panicle-1 (100.4). For N doses, results revealed that the dose of 40 kg N ha-1 showed the highest seed yield (5.24 t ha-1) due to production of highest number of effective tillers hill-1 (10.2) and seeds panicle-1 (129.0). On the other hand, the lowest seed yield (2.96 t ha-1) was recorded in 0 kg N ha-1. However, the highest seed protein (8.40%) was recorded in 120 N kg ha-1 which was identical to 80 kg N ha-1 (8.38%). The result concludes that three split application of 40 kg N ha-1 at 0, 20 and 45 DAT could be the best practice for maximizing seed yield having moderate protein content in transplant aman rice cv Binadhan-7.

To find out the best dose and time of nitrogen application for getting maximum yield of rice T. aman variety, BINAdhan-7.

Field experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during July to November, 2007. A newly recommended transplant aman rice variety Binadhan-7 was used as the test crop. The experiment comprised of three times of nitrogen (N) application viz., N applied in three equal splits at (a) final land preparation or 0 days after transplanting (DAT), 20 and 45 DAT (T1), (b) 10, 30 and 50 DAT (T2) and (c) 20, 40 and 60 DAT (T3), and four doses of N viz. 0, 40, 80 and 120 kg N ha-1. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications where time of nitrogen application and nitrogen dose were placed in main plot and sub-plot, respectively. The size of a unit plot was 3.0 m ´ 2.5 m. The soil of the experimental plots was sandy loam with total nitrogen 0.12%, available phosphorus 13 ppm and exchangeable potassium 15 meq/100 g soil. N was applied in the form of urea as per treatment. In T1 treatment, one-third urea was applied as basal dose during final land preparation and rest were top dressed in two equal splits and other treatments, urea was top-dressed at different growth stages as per treatments. A fertilizer dose of 110-60-34-5 kg ha-1 of TSP, MP, gypsum and zinc sulphate, respectively, were applied at the time of final land preparation. Twenty five day-old seedlings were transplanted on 2 August 2007 at the rate of 2 seedlings per hill maintaining spacing of  20 cm × 15 cm. Two hand weedings were done at 25 and 50 DAT. No pesticide was used. Other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data on plant characters were recorded from ten sample hills except the seed and straw yields which were collected from whole plots. Total nitrogen of seeds was determined by Micro-Kjeldahl method (AOAC, 1980) and then converted into protent content in seed. The collected data were analyzed statistically following the analysis of variance technique and the mean differences were adjudged with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test using the statistical computer package program, MSTAT (Russell, 1986).

Based on the experimental results, it may be concluded that three split application of 40 kg N ha-1 at 0, 20 and 45 DAT could be the best practice for maximizing seed yield having moderate protein content in transplant aman rice cv BINAdhan-7.
