Heterobeltiosis in Radish, Raphanus Sativus

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment on radish [Raphanus sativus} with seven parents and their 21 Fls (without reciprocals) was conducted during winter 1992-93 at the Institute of Postgraduate Studies in Agriculture, Salna, Gazipur, Bangladesh. The objective of the esperiment was to estimate the nature and extent of heterobeltiosis in Ft hybrids. The heteTobeltiosis over better parent was estimated in 21 Fts of radish for nine characters including root weight per plant. Eighteen crosses showed significant heterotic performance for earliness than the better parent. The range of heterobeltiosis was 0.46 to 71.60 percent for root length, 1.75 to 38.05 percent for root diameter 059 to 106.29 percent for root volume, 37.57 to 165.76 percent for root weight, 30.00 to 146.87 percent for plant weight. 0.21 to 48.71 for number of leaves per plant, 032 to 39.73 for leaf length and 12.27 to 56.42 percent for leaf breadth, All crosses yielded significantly higher root and plant weight over the better parent. Considering performance and extent of heterosis, the cross Kuni x Tasaki ranked first.

Objectives:

To estimate the nature and extent of heterobeltiosis in FI hybrids.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted with seven geographically diverse radish cultivars and their 21 FIS at the Institute of Postgraduate Studies in Agriculture, Salna, Gazipur-1703, Bangladesh in the winter season of 1992-93. In 1991-92, 7 x 7 diallel cross (without reciprocals) was done. Probable origin and observed morphological features of these varieties are summarized. The 21 FlS alongwith seven parents were planted on November 12, 1992 in RCBD with three replications. Each plot consisted of single row of 5 meter with a spacing of 50 cm. Ten plants were randomly selected from each plot for recording observations on nine metric traits. Heterobeltiosis was estimated following Mather and Jinks (5). The significance test for heterobeltiosis was done using standard error of the value of better parent.

Therefore, with increased genetic diversity between parental varieties higher level of heterobeltiosis is expected in F_I hybrids and larger variance and transgressive segregates in F₂ and later generations.
