Development of Jute and Jute-acrylic Blended Blankets with the Variation of Different Concentrations of Chemicals in the Processing Stage.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out in the laboratory of spinning, wet processing, Testing and Physics Department of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute in 1999-2000. Two ply 7.5lbs/spy of jute/acrylic (80:20) blended yarns were chemically modified by treating with 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 30% of caustic soda solutions followed by bleaching, dyeing and finishing at room temperature. Different qualities of blanket were manufacture by using 20^s/2 of 100% cotton yarn as warp and untreated & treated jute blended yarns as weft. A few characteristics properties of the constituent yarns and blankets were determined.It was observed that the quantity ratio value of treated yarn decreased generally with increase of concentration of caustic soda solutions. The values of twist per meter of treated yarns increase with the increase of concentration of caustic soda solutions due to shrinkage.

Objectives:

To produce jute and jute synthetic blended blankets with required performance.

Methodology:

The yarn of jute/acrylic blended in composition (80:20) by weight was procured. Two ply yarn of 258.36gd tex (7.5lbs/spy) nominal count of above blended composition was spun. spinning was done by using conventional jute spinning system. The blended plied yarns were chemically modified with 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 30% of caustic soda solution at room temperature. Some quantities of blended plied yarns were remained untreated. All the above treated and untreated yarns were then bleached, dyed and finished. Various characteristics properties of these yarns viz. count in tex and lbs/spy, breaking load, quality ratio, twist per inch and meter were determined. Different types of fabrics were manufacture in collaboration with Mechanical processing Division using 20 count/2 of 100% cotton yarns as warp and untreated and chemically treated yarn (10%, 15%, 20% caustic soda solution)as weft which were used separately for each kind of fabric in picanol loom fitted with dobby. The woven fabrics were then pass through the raising machine to acquire its typical fleecy look and soft feel Characteristic properties of these blankets viz. Breaking load, Wt. Per sq meter were measured.

Achievement/Findings:

It is found that the values of quality ratios of untreated & treated yarns with 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 30% of caustic soda solutions were 72.36, 55.91, 43.13, 45.49, 49.12, 43.67 lbs/spy respectively. It was observed that the quantity ratio value of treated yarn decreased generally with increase of concentration of caustic soda solutions. The values of twist per meter of treated yarns increase with the increase of concentration of caustic soda solutions due to shrinkage.
