Multiple Parasitism of the Parasitoid Trichogramma Zahiri

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Multiple parasitism study of the rice hispa egg parasitoid, Trichogramma zahiri was done in the laboratory and found that percent single parasitism was high (59.25%) during first 3 hour of parasitization when multiple parasitism was relatively low (40.34%). After three hours of initial parasitization, percent single parasitism decreased and multiple parasitism increased to a high level. The multiple parasitism continued to increase and reached 66.25% at 24 hours of parasitoid exposure.

Objectives:

To evaluate the tendency of the parasitoid T. zahiri for parasitization with single egg or multiple eggs in a host.

Methodology:

One or two pieces of rice leaf having 20 freshly laid rice hispa eggs were offered to a single female parasitoid in a test tube (23×8 cm²). The lower end of the leaf was wrapped with water soaked cotton to keep it fresh. The test tubes were kept on a table and light was provided all times on the test tubes by fiber optic cold light source. Both the ends of the test tubes were covered by black cloth except the area where corresponding the egg position. Dark shedding forced the parasitoid to remain active around lightened area where host eggs were available. The parasitoids were removed 3, 6, 12 and 24h after release. The individual parasitized eggs were kept separately in the laboratory. After adult emergence unhatched eggs were dissolved separately in alcohol and Carbol-xylene solution (10:1) for 24 hours. The solution of alcohol and Carbol-xylene helped to dissolve the chlorophyll of rice leaf which thereby made host and parasitoid eggs more visible. Single and multiple parasitism were determined under microscope and data were analyzed by chi-square test of Excel 2000 programme.

Single or multiple parasitism of rice hispa egg by T. zahiri was significantly influenced by the exposure period of the parasitoid with the rice hispa egg. The chi-square analysis indicated that the difference increased as the time progressed. The results showed that percent single parasitism was high (59.25%) during first 3 hour of parasitization when multiple parasitism was (40.34%) relatively low. After three hours of initial parasitization, percent single parasitism decreased and multiple parasitism increased to a high level. The multiple parasitism continued to increase and reached 66.25% at 24 hours of parasitoid exposure. These results indicated that the parasitoid is able to discriminate between parasitized and healthy eggs within short period of its release after which discrimination ability decreases.
