The unmodified jute fabrics (Carpet backing cloth) were treated with aq. solution of Sodium silicate and ortho phosphoric acid in single bath process under certain conditions of application and it is found that jute fabrics become flameproofed (completely resistant to both afterflaming and afterglowing ) without undesirable loss of the tensile strength.

To find out textile finishing/proofing processes for imparting flameproof finishes to jute fabrics/yarns to prepare jute finished products for diversified textile uses.

Jute fabrics (CBC) were scoured with sodium carbonate and Lissapol-N and were bleached with hydrogen peroxide under some standard conditions. These bleached jute fabrics were used in the whole experimental works. Flame retardant solutions of effective flame retardant chemicals such as sodium silicate and ortho -phosphoric acid together with some suitable finishing additives were prepared in the padding bath using standard recipe.Samples of bleached jute fabrics of known size and weight were padded with the above stated flame retardant solutions (with variation of the concentration of sodium silicate and ortho-phosphoric acid) by electrical padding mangle with constant stirring of the solutions in the bath and ensuring 110% liquor pick-up.The padded samples were dried in the stenter.

Jute Fabrics (CBC) were scoured and bleached. The bleached jute fabrics were treated with flame retardant solution of sodium silicate and ortho-phosphoric acid together with some finishing additives under some conditions. It was found that the treatment can provide good flame resistance property to the fabrics.
