Assessment of Fertility Status of SAU Farm Soils and the Development of Database

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The Project is being carried out in Soil Science Department of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University. It was necessary to assess these properties of the soils plot/block wise of the farms and develop database which will be helpful for plant and soil researchers of the University. Through this project, analysis of soils of the SAU farm will provide detailed information on the physico-chemical properties and nutrient status of the soils. the percentage of sand in surface soil (0-15 cm) ranged from 15.64 to 36.24 and that of subsurface soil (16-30 cm) from 21.64 to 40.24, silt from 36 to 59.4 and 29.4 to 50.6% ,clay from 19.76 to 34.96 and 17.76 to 46.96, organic carbon from 0.247 to 2.15 and 0.209 to 0.970,Soil pH from 4.88 to 7.41 and 4.93 to 8.06, CEC (cmol/kg) from 13.17 to 23.31 and 11.84 to 31.31, total N was from 0.1629% to 0.0187% and 0.0851% ,Available P (mgkg^-1⁾ from 17.64 to 31.21 and 15.86 to 41.93, Available K (meq/100g soil) from 0.120 to 0.212 and 0.108 to 0.285, Available S (mgkg^-1⁾ from 5.30 to 36.07 and 6.115 to 20.79,Available Zn (mgkg^-1) from 0.782 to 1.812 and 1.082 to 2.012, Available Cm (mgkg^-1) from 0.1753 to 1.5258 and 0.1483 to 1.6884,Available Fe (mgkg^-1) from 8.798 to 21.17 and 12.17 to 22.64,Available Mn (mgkg^-1) from 1.466 to 3.398 and 2.029 to 3.773.

Objectives:

a) To evaluate major physico-chemical properties such as soil texture, pH, CEC, EC and organic carbon of surface and subsurface soil

b) To evaluate the nutrient status of soil

c) To develop database of soil testing data of the research plots.

Methodology:

There are 52 plots in Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University ( SAU) farm. Soil samples were at random collected from two depths (0-15) and 15-30 cm). Therefore there were 52 x 2 or 104 composite samples in total. The soil samples are being analyzed for soil texture, organic carbon, pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC) and electrical conductivity (EC), total N, available P, K, S and other nutrients, following standard methods.

Achievement/Findings:

The percentage of sand in surface soil (0-15 cm) ranged from 15.64 to 36.24 and that of subsurface soil (16-30 cm) from 21.64 to 40.24. The percentage of silt in surface soil varied from 36 to 59.4 and subsurface soil contained 29.4 to 50.6% silt. The percentage of clay in surface soil ranged from 19.76 to 34.96 and that of subsurface soil form 17.76 to 46.96,organic carbon from 0.247 to 2.15 and 0.209 to 0.970,Soil pH from 4.88 to 7.41 and 4.93 to 8.06,CEC (cmol/kg) from 13.17 to 23.31 and 11.84 to 31.31, total N was 0.1629% to 0.0187% and 0.0851% to 0.0187%, Available P (mgkg^-1) from 17.64 to 31.21 and 15.86 to 41.93, Available K (meq/100g soil) from 0.120 to 0.212 and 0.108 to 0.285,Available S (mgkg^-1) from 5.30 to 36.07 and 6.115 to 20.79,Available Zn (mgkg^-1) from 0.782 to 1.812 and 1.082 to 2.012,Available Cm (mgkg^-1) from 0.1753 to 1.5258 and 0.1483 to 1.6884, Available Fe (mgkg^-1) from 8.798 to 21.17 and 12.17 to 22.64, Available Mn (mgkg^-1) from 1.466 to 3.398 and 2.029 to 3.773.
