Effect of Postharvest Application of Growth Regulators on Shelf Life of Banana

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effects of ethrel, NAA, GA₃, kinetin and BA were evaluated on shelf-life of banana cv. Amritasagar at ambient temperature (30-32°C) and relative humidity ranging between 75 and 80%. Ethrel (500-2000 ppm) significantly accelerated ripening period by about 4 days compared to control. GA₃ (100-200 ppm), Kinetin (5-15 ppm) and BA (30 ppm) significantly delayed ripening period by 5, 2 and 4 days, respectively, compared to control. The loss in weight increased with the increase of storage period. Shelf-life of banana was also influenced by different growth regulators. It was longer in GA₃, kinetine and BA treatments and shorter in ethrel and NAA treated fruits compared to control. Fruit quality was not significantly affected by different growth regulators.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effects of ethrel, NAA, GA₃, kinetin and BA on shelf-life of banana cv. Amritasagar

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out on banana cv. Amritasagar in the laboratory of the Department of Horticulture, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur during July 1998. During the study period the temperature and relative humidity of the laboratory ranged between 30 and 32°C and 75 and 80%, respectively. Matured banana bunches of 115 days after shooting of uniform size, shape and colour were used in this experiment. Hands of banana were separated from the bunches and there were three hands in a treatment in each replication. First hand of bunches was used for replication 1, second hand for replication 2 and third hand for replication 3. Five different growth regulators- ethrel (500, 1000 and 2000 ppm), NAA (300, 600 and 1200 ppm), GA) (100, 150 and 200 ppm), kinetin (5, 10 and 15 ppm) and benzyladenine (10, 20 and 30 ppm), each in three concentrations were used in this experiment. So, there were altogether 16 treatments including the control. The experiment was laid out in completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications. Hands were first dipped in chemical solutions as per treatment for 15 minutes, shade dried for 30 minutes and then stored at room temperature by hanging those from the rope. For determining the physiological weight losses, the initial weight of hands were recorded just after separation from the bunches. Subsequently, their weights were recorded at two days interval and the loss in weight was expressed as percentage over the initial weight. The changes in peel color during ripening were divided into six color indices and the changes were recorded at two days interval till the entire peel develops uniform deep yellow color. Each index is defined by the color of the peel. Three fingers of each treatment from every replication were selected randomly to study their qualitative characters at full ripe stage.

Achievement/Findings:

In brief, it may be said that ripening of banana fruits can be regulated by growth regulators without affecting fruit quality. So, harvested banana fruits may be treated with 500 ppm ethrel to accelerate ripening and 150 ppm GA₃ to delay ripening.
