Studies on the Physic-mechanical Properties of Jute, Kenaf and Allied Fibres

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Studies were made on some varieties of white jute fibers produced from IJO germ plasm namely BZ-1-3, LISA, BA-2, SOLIMOES, BZ-2-2, CVL-I and BRANKA. Physic o-mechanical properties of these fibers such as fineness, bundle strength and bursting energy, tenacity etc., were determined and compared with the properties of white jute fiber already available in Bangladesh. The study revealed that the varieties BZ-1-3 and LISA all other varieties viz. BA-2, SOLIMOES, BZ-2-2, CVL-I and BRANKA are acceptable compared to Bangladesh white jute fibers.

Objectives:

1.Evaluation of textile qualities of the new varieties of jute and allied fibers developed by BJRI (Agriculture) with a view to standardizing them and assessing suitability for spinning.

2.Evaluation of fiber qualities of the newly acquired jute, kenaf and Mesta germplasm at BJRI through IJO, IBPGR and others sources

Methodology:

In this study seven fiber varieties Corchorus Capsularies, namely BZ-1-3,LISA,BA-2, SOLIMOES, BZ-2-2, CVL-I and BRANKA produced by BJRI (Agriculture) through new germ plasm supplied by IJO, have been used. The fibers were produced under the same Agronomic conditions. Various physic o-mechanical properties of these fibers such as fineness, bundle strength and bursting energy, tenacity etc, were determined through standard test methods and regression analysis. Test work was done in the standard atmosphere of temp.20?C +? 2? C and RH 65%+? 2%.

Achievement/Findings:

The physio-mechanical properties of fibres determine their performance and suitability for their spinning. Thus, certain physic-mechanical properties of the different varieties of white jute fibres, namely BZ-1-3, LISA, BA-2, SOLIMOES, BZ-2-2, CVL-I and BRANKA of IJO germplasm were determined. These values were compared with those of the varieties of whit jute fibre already prevailing in Bangladesh. The fineness in micron of these varieties ranges from 34.68 to 43.8 micron. This value for Bangladesh white jute is generally from 36 to 42 micron. So as regards to fineness these varieties are acceptable and spin able. Again the mean values of Bundle strength of jute fibre of the different varieties of IJO germplasm were from 6.89 to 13.29 lbs/mg. This value for Bangladesh white jute is from 9.50 to 12.12 lbs/mg.Thus except the varieties BZ-1-3 and LISA al other varieties are comparable with Bangladesh white jute fibre (C.Capsularies). Further, mean tenacity value of the jute fibre of the varieties of IJO germplasm are from 19.10 to 33.40 g-wt/tex. These figures for Bangladesh white jute are within the range from 24.2 to 31.5 g-wt/tex.Thus, compared to those of Bangladesh white jute fibre all the IJO varieties are acceptable except the varieties BZ-1-3 and LISA.
