Intercropping Mungbean with Mukhikachu

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the BARI farm, Joydebpur, Gazipur during the period from March 2009 to October 2009 to find out optimum mungbean population to be intercropped with mukhikachu. Three planting system viz., mukhikachu double row + one row of mungbean in between two double row of mukhikachu (100:30), mukhikachu double row + two rows of mungbean in between two double row of mukhikachu (100:60), mukhikachu double row + mungbean broadcast (100:73) were compared with their respective sole crops. In intercropping systems, yield of mungbean reduced upto 64% and that of mukhikachu reduced upto 4% compared to respective sole crop. The highest mukhikachu equivalent yield (21.04 t/ha). gross return (Tk 2524480 /ha), gross margin (Tk 200890/ha) and benefit cost ratio (4.89) were recorded in mukhikachu double row + two rows of mungbean combination. The results revealed that intercropping two rows mungbean (60%) with double rows mukhikachu is economically profitable for Joydebpur area.

Objectives:

The experiment was conducted to find out appropriate intercropping system having minimum crop competition with maximum economic return

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Gray Terrace Soils of farm BARI Joydebpur, Gazipur during the period from March 2009 to October 2009. The soil of the experimental field was silty clay loam in texture with pH 5.8 belonging to Chhiata series under AEZ-28. Treatment combinations were : T₁= Sole mukhikachu (double row), T₂ = Sole mungbean, T₃ = Mukhikachu double row + one row of mungbean in between two double row of mukhikachu (100:30), T₄ = Mukhikachu double row + two rows of mungbean in between two double row of mukhikachu (100:60) and T₅ = Mukhikachu double row + mungbean in between two double row of mukhikachu (100:73). The experiment was laid out in a RCB mug 6 variety of mungbean were used in this experiment. In double row system of mukhikachu, 55 cm between double row, 20 cm within double row and 45 cm between plant to plant distance were maintained. Sole mungbean was sown in 30 cm apart solid line. Mungbean was thinned 15 days after sowing for maintaining 10 cm plant to plant distance. In intercropping system, mungbean was sown as per treatment.
