A field experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from March to October, 2000 to evaluate the effect of different doses of urea and Muriate of Potash (MP) and their time of application on the growth, yield of Mukhi Kachu cv. Bilashi. Four levels of urea and MP fertilizers viz., F0 (no urea or MP), F1 (100 kg each of urea and MP/ha), F2 (200 kg each of urea and MP/ha), F3 (300 kg each of urea and MP/ha) and tour time of application viz.., T1 (full dose at 60 days after planting (DAP), T2 (1/2 dose at 60 DAP and 1/2 dose at 100 DAP), T3 (1/3 dose each at 60 DAP, 100 DAP and 140 DAP) and T4 (1/5 as basal dose, 2/5 at 40 DAP and 2/5 at 90 DAP) were used in this investigation. Different doses of urea and MP fertilizer and their time of application had significant influence on growth, yield contributing characters and yield of Mukhi Kachu. The plant height, number of suckers per hill, percentage of foliage coverage, weight of corm per hill, yield of corm per hill, weight of cormel per plot and yield of cormel per hectare were maximum when the highest level of urea and MP fertilizers (F3) was used. The yield of corms and cormels under the treatment were 6.77 and 35.50 t/ha, respectively. The highest yield of corms (5.90 t/ha) and cormels (31.26 t/ha) were obtained from T3. Similarly, the combination of F3T3 gave the highest yield of corms (7.20 t/ha) and cormels (47.89 t/ha).

To observe the effect of different doses and time of application of urea and MP fertilizers on the growth and yield of Mukhi Kachu.

The experiment was carried out at the Horticulture Farm, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from March to October 2000. The geographic position of the experimental site is in the sub-tropical zone, characterized by heavy rainfall during the months of April to September and scanty during the rest period of the year. The soil of the experimental plot was silty loam in texture belonging to the Old Brahmaputra Flood Plain (AEZ-9). The soil pH value was 6.5, containing 1.49% organic matter, 0.08% total nitrogen, 17.42 ppm available P and 0.13 meq/100g of soil exchangeable K. There were 16 treatments comprising four doses of urea and MP fertilizers (F0= O kg/ha, F1= 100 kg each of urea and MP/ha, F2= 200 kg each of urea and MP/ha, F3= 300 kg each of urea and MP/ha), and four time of application (T1= full dose of urea and MP at 60 DAP, T2= 1/2 dose each at 60 and 100 DAP, T3= 1/3 dose each at 60, 100 and 140 DAP, T4= 1/5 as basal, 2/5 at 40 DAP and 2/5 at 90 DAP). The experiment was laid out followed by RCB (Factorial) design with three replications. The unit plot size was 2.7 x 2.4 m. Two adjacent unit plots and 50 cm and 1 m space separated blocks, respectively. In addition of fertilizer according to the treatments, cowdung and triple super phosphate (TSP) were applied @ 15 t and 125 kg per hectare, respectively in the individual plot. The entire quantity of cowdung was applied at the time of general land preparation and the entire quantity of TSP was applied during the final land preparation. Medium size (28±1g) seed cormels of Mukhi kachu cv. Bilashi were planted at a depth of 7-8 cm on 1 March, 2000 maintaining a row to row distance of 60 cm and plant to plum distance of 45 cm. Weedings were done as and when necessary. In case of control plot two earthing up was done. The first earthing up was carried out at 60 DAP and the second was done at 90 DAP. Earthing up was done in other plots as per top dressing schedules. The crop was grown under under condition. Some plants were infested by red mite (Tetrangchus bicalatus) which was controlled by spraying Neuron (1 ml/L). The crop was harvested after 230 days of planting, when the leaves of all the main plants were dead. Data were collected on different yield contributing characters and yield at maximum vegetative growth stage (130 DAP) and at harvest. From the middle rows of each plot eight plants were selected randomly to record data. Recorded data were analyzed statistically and means were compared by the least significant difference (LSD) test at 1% level of probability.

The highest level of urea and MP fertilizers (300 kg each of urea and MP/ha) with three split (1/3, dose each at 60, 100 and 140 DAP) application could be optimum for the production of Mukhi kuchu (cv. Bilashi).
