Effect of Pre-flowering Aplication of Growth Regulators on the Growth, Flowering and Yield of Banana

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

NAA (50, 100 and 150 ppm), CCC (1000, 2000 and 3000 ppm) and ethrel (100, 200 and 300 ppm) were applied to banana plants 5 and 6.5 months after planting. NAA and CCC significantly increased the height and girth of pseudostem while ethrel had reverse effect. NAA (50 and 100 ppm) to a limited extent increased leaf production. Sucker production was increased by all growth regulators but the highest number of suckers were produced by ethrel 300 ppm. Flowering and fruit maturity were accelerated by CCC while ethrel showed similar result when applied 5 months after planting. NAA treated plants took longer time to maturity. However, higher yield was obtained with NAA (50-100 ppm) and CCC (1000-3000 ppm) at both the time of applications.

Objectives:

To study the effects of pre- flowering application of growth regulators on growth, flowering and yield of banana in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the research farm of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur during April, 1997 to May, 1998. Banana cv. Amritasagar was used having mean rhizome weight of 1000 ± 100g. Foliar sprays of plant growth regulators viz. Naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) at 50, 100 and 150 ppm, 2- chloroethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (CCC) at 1000, 2000 and 3000 ppm and 2- chloroethyl phosphonic acid (Ethrel) at 100, 200 and 300 ppm were used in this experiment. So, there were 10 treatments including one control. The growth regulators were applied in two different stages of plants i.e. 5 and 6.5 months after planting. The plants were completely drenched with the desired concentration of growth regulators by a hand sprayer. A few drops of Twenty 20 were added to the spray solutions as a sticker. The experiment was designed as a factorial experiment in the randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 6 x 6 m and the plants were spaced 2 x 2 m. The pit size was 60 x 60 x 60 cm. Organic manures and fertilizers were applied in pit as well as top dressing at the rate of cowdung 20 kg, triple super phosphate 240 g, muriate of potash 240 g and urea 260 g per plant. Bunches of all treatments including the control were covered with blue-polythene soon after completion of fruit setting. Morphological characters in respect of pseudostem height and girth, number of leaves, sucker production, time taken to flowering and maturity, total cropping period, yield and yield components were studied.
