Ladys Finger-kaon Intercropping Systems Under Different Row Arrangements

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the regional Agricultural Research Station Jamalpur during February to June 2009 and 2010 to determine a suitable crop combination for intercropping lady's finger and kaon for higher productivity and profitability. There were seven treatments. The highest fruit yield of lady's finger was found in T2 and the lowest was found in T4 . Seed yield of ladisfinger varied significantly among the treatments and the highest seed yield (15.31 t/ha) was obtained from T1 followed by T2 in both the years. Among the intercropping treatments T₄ (1.70t/ha) and T₆ (1.75 t/ha) gave the maximum yield of kaon in both years. LER was higher than one in all intercrop treatments and maximum LER (1.44) was found in T₆ in the first year and T4 (1.47) in the second year. Maximum gross return (176280 Tk. /ha) and gross margin (133558 Tk./ha) were obtained from T₂ which was followed by T₅ (117999 Tk./ha) and T₆ (113499 Tk./ha) in the first year.

Objectives:

To find out suitable intercrop combination of kaon and lady's finger for higher productivity and profitability

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station Jamalpur during February to June 2009 and 2010 to determine a suitable planting pattern for intercropping lady's finger and kaon in terms of yield and economic benefit. There were six treatments viz. sole kaon (T₁), sole lady's finger (T₂), one row kaon in between rows of lady's finger (T₃) , two rows of kaon in between two paired rows of lady's finger (T₄), two rows of kaon in between two paired rows of lady's finger (T₅) and four rows of kaon in between two paired rows of lady's finger (T₆). Another treatment of one row of kaon at every two alternate rows of lady's finger (T₇) was included in the second year.Crop Varieties BARI Dherosh-1 (lady's finger) and Titas (kaon) were used in the experiment. Both the crops lady's finger and kaon were sown on 16 February 2009 and 19 February 2010.Spacing for sole lady's finger was 50 cm x 40 cm and kaon was sown in 25 cm apart solid line. Fertilizer rate was 60-20-40-10-1.0-6.0 kg/ha of NPKSZn and B, respectively for lady's finger and 46-12-20 kg/ha of NPK, respectively for sole kaon. For intercrpping systems fertilizer was applied as per recommended dose for sole lady's finger and no additional fertilizer was applied for kaon.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the intercropping treatments T₄ & T₆ gave the maximum yield of kaon in both years. LER was higher than one in all intercrop treatments and maximum LER (1.44) was found in T₆ in the first year and T₄ (1.47) in the second year. maximum gross return and gross margin were obtained from T₂which was followed by T₅ & T₆in the first year. In the second year, the second highest gross return and gross margin were obtained from T₇followed by T₅also.
