On-station and On-farm Performance of Six Mungbean Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

On-Station and On-Farm trials were conducted in Madaripur district of Bangladesh during the kharif-I of 2008 and 2009 to evaluate the varietals performance of mungbean (Vigna radiata L. Wilczek) in respect of yield and yield contributing characters. Six genotypes of mungbean viz. BM×K₂-0300011-1, BM×K₂-0300011-4, BM×K₂-03000 and BM×K₂-030005-4 including two check BARImung-5 and BARImung-6 were included in the trials. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with three replications. Results revealed that among the genotypes BM×K₂-03000 gave the highest grain yield and showed low disease reaction of MYMV in both the years in all trials. The average highest grain yield was recorded (1962 kg/ha) in the genotype BM×K₂-03000. The lowest grain yields (2437 kg/ha and 1746 kg/ha) were recorded in the line BM×K₂-0300011-1 at the years of 2008 and 2009 in on-station and the variety BARImung-5 gave the lowest grain yields (1170 kg/ha and 1050 kg/ha) at farmer’s field. So, the genotype BM×K₂-03000 might be suitable and adaptive for cultivation in Southern part of Bangladesh.

Objectives:

To evaluate the varietals performance of mungbean (Vigna radiata L. Wilczek) in respect of yield and yield contributing characters.

Methodology:

An experiment was carried out at Pulses Research Sub-Station (PRSS), BARI, Madaripur and farmer’s field of Ghatmazhi in Madaripur during the kharif-I of 2008 and 2009 to evaluate the performance of six mungbean genotypes. The genotypes were BM×K₂-0300011-1, BM×K₂-0300011-4, BM×K₂-03000, BM×K₂-030005-4 and two check BARImung-5 & BARImung-6 were taken in the trial. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The unit plot size was 4m × 3.2m with 40cm × 10cm spacing. Seeds were sown on February 20, 2008 and on February 25, 2009 in on-station (PRSS). The crop was harvested within April 19, 2008 to May 28, 2008 and April 24, 2009 to May 10, 2009 in on-station (PRSS), Madaripur. Seeds were also sown on February 21, 2008 and on February 26, 2009 in farmer’s field. The crop was harvested within April 20, 2008 to May 27, 2008 and April 25, 2009 to May 9, 2009 in farmer’s field. One irrigation was given after seed sowing for better germination. Two hand weeding were done to keep the crop free from weeds. Data on yield contributing characters and MYMV disease infestation (1-9 scoring scale) were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants from each plot. Seed yield (kg/ha) data were recorded from the whole plot. Collected data were analyzed statistically using MSTAT-C.

It may be concluded from two years trial that the genotype BM×K₂-03000 produced the highest seed yield and showed the low disease reaction of MYMV both at on-station and at farmer’s field. Therefore, the genotype BM×K₂-03000 could be considered for further investigation to release it as a variety for southern part of Bangladesh.
