Genetic Diversity Assessment of Different Kenaf Accessions Through Morpho-agronomic Characterization

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The released kenaf varieties (HC-2 and HC-95) are the products of pure line selection from a few common accessions. They contain very limited genetic variability with respect to adaptability to different agro-climatic zones, fibre yield and susceptibility to diseases and pests. Therefore, genetic improvement of kenaf is needed to broaden the genetic base of new cultivars. The study was carried out to investigate genetic diversity among kenaf accessions. Some important morph o-agronomic traits at 60-90 DAS (days after sowing) and major yield contributing characters from five randomly selected plants were recorded after harvest. Genetic diversity was evaluated on the basis of multivariate analysis. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) based on correlation matrix of 12 morph o-physiological traits showed that the first five axes accounted for 92.85% of total variation among the accessions. Cluster analysis grouped the 25 indigenous and exotic kenaf accessions into six clusters. The distribution pattern indicated that the accessions collected from the same location were grouped into different clusters. The results on intra and inter-cluster distances showed that the accessions were highly divergent from each other.

Objectives:

To evaluate the genetic diversity available in some exotic and indigenous kenaf accessions at morpho-agronomic level.

Methodology:

Twenty five accessions of kenaf including two check varieties (HC-2 and HC-95) were selected for this experiment. The experimental materials were selected on the basis of diverse geographical locations. All the materials were collected from Gene Bank of BJRI. The experiment was conducted at Central Station, Dhaka. Seeds were sown on two dates of sowing i.e. early (1st week of April for fibre data) and late (mid July for seed data). Each accession was grown in double rows of 1 m length in RCBD with three replications. Spacing was 30 cm between rows, 10-12 cm within rows and 1 m between blocks. The application of fertilizers and other agronomic practices were carried out to normal recommendations.

Genetic diversity is the raw material for plant breeding. Accurate estimate of genetic diversity is important consideration for any meaningful plant breeding program. From this study, a wide range of genetic diversity for morph o-agronomical traits was observed among kenaf accessions which may be used to broaden the genetic base of new kenaf cultivars.
