Effect of Two Levels of Iso-nitrogenous Inputs of Cow and Poultry Manure on Plankton Production and Fish Growth.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted during the period from November, 1998 to October, 2001 to evaluated the effect of two levels of iso-nitrogenous inputs of cow and poultry manure on the plankton production and fish growth in ponds having the surface area of 44 m² and a depth of 1 m. Two levels of iso-nitrogenous inputs (24 and 12 kg N/ha) were used in the experiment. Four treatments, viz, cow manure at high and low levels (CH and CL, respectively) and poultry manure at high and low levels (CH and CL, respectively), each in triplicate, were used in the present study. CH and pH were used as 6443 and 3721 kg/ha respectively which were equivalent to 24 kg N/ha whereas CL and PL were used at the rate of 3221 and 1860 kg/ha respectively which were equivalent to 12 kg N/ha. Before starting each experiment, the ponds were cleaned by repeated cutting of aquatic weeds and undesirable species were eradicated from the ponds by repeated netting using seine and cast net. The ponds were limed at the rate of 250 kg/ha. All the manures were applied fortnightly over the ponds as slurry. The physic-chemical parameters of water, plankton production, growth of fish and effect of manure of stocking density of fishes were recorded once in a month. The moisture content of cow manure was 70% and that of poultry manure was 75%. The nitrogen content of cow manure and poultry manure were 1.49 and 2.15% respectively whereas the ash content of cow manure was 22% and that of poultry manure was 32%. Four groups of phytoplankton such as Cynophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Bascillariophyceae and Euglenophyceae and four groups of zooplankton such as Rotifera, Copepoda, Cladocera and Nauplius were encountered in the present study. Significantly the higher numbers of all the groups of both phytoplankton and zooplankton were recorded at the high dose of poultry manure (pH) treatment which was followed by the high dose of cow manure (CH), low dose of poultry manure (PL) and low dose of cow manure (CL). The maximum percent weight gain and specific growth rate (SGR) of all the fishes (rui, catla and carpio) was recorded in the pH treatment than that of other treatments CH, PL and CL. In case of different stocking densities (6000, 8000, 10000 fish/ha), the best growth performance of all the fishes was recorded at the stocking densities of 6000 fish/ha. All the water quality parameters were within the productive range.
