Characterization of Interspecific Hybrid Progenies of C. Trilocularis X C.capsularis and Their Back Cross

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An interspecific hybrid was obtained from the cross between C. trilocularis and C. capsularis in 1990. A large number of segregants were obtained from the hybrid during the last succesive years. Variations were observed in those progenies for agronomical and morphological characters. The hybrid progenies could be useful for breeding purposes if they are properly characterized and evaluated. Some of these progeny lines are being tested during the past years for multilocation trials, varietal trials, and progeny yield trials and rest of the lines are being preservedin the genebank for further use. In 1997 a total of 111 lines were sown and characterized for morpho-agronomical trials and 20 lines were selected on the basis of plant height, base diameter, disease reaction and other agronomic characters for further evaluation in the field. On the basis of agronomic, morphological and pathological characters associated with selectable markers some lines are found promising as hybrid derivatives.

Objectives:

Number of treatment: 114(111 progenies of C. trilocularis x C. capsularis with check varieties CVL-1, D-154 and CVE 3)

Number of replications: 3

Length of each row: 1.5 m

Space between the rows: 30 cm

Space between trials: 90 cm

Size of each plot for all treatment: 108.6 sq.m

Net area under the experiment: 325.8 sq. m

Date of sowing, germination and first flowering, number of plants for each line/block after final thinning and harvest, all agronomic characters like height and base diameter of 10 randomly selected plants with fiber weight after retting, observation of pests and diseases with special emphasis on stem rot, leaf mosaic, root knot and nematode.
