Assessment of Physical Characteristics of Jute Fabrics: to Study the Construction and Weight in Relation to Yarn Characteristics of Woven Jute Fabrics.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To ascertain the performance characteristics of different jute fabrics, hessian (11 oz/yd), C.B.C. (9 oz/yd), jute canvas, all from Adamjee Jute Mills and fabrics of Dhobdhobey pat were taken for analysis of their physical and mechanical characteristics in the Physics and Testing Division during 1982 at standard room temperature and humidity conditions. As the fabrics were of different characters and were also made of different batch compositions, so their properties could not be related among themselves. A general review of their physical and mechanical properties was given in the Annual Technical Report 1982.

Objectives:

1.To measure the physical characteristics of jute fabrics having different warp and weft constituent and to relate these to the characteristics of the yarn

2.To study the construction and weight in relation to yarn characteristics of woven jute fabrics.

Methodology:

In attempt to ascertain the performance characteristics of different jute fabrics from Adamjee Jute Mills and Novocell fabrics of different counts were taken for analysis of their physical and mechanical characteristics. The different physical and mechanical properties such as ends per inch, picks per inch, warp and weft wise yarn count, yarn twist, yarn strength, yarn extension breaking of fabrics, warp and weft wise yarn crimp, weight of the fabrics, cloth cover factor, warp and weft wise cloth assistance factor, crease recover, bursting strength were measured in the physics and testing department of the BJRI during 1982 at standard room temperature and humidity conditions.

Achievement/Findings:

The jute canvass was of double warp plain weave structure and was vary compact in nature. The number of warp threads per inch was just double than the weft thread/inch. Although the counts of warp and weft threads were almost equal, the actual counts in both the directions varied from 6.5 to 12.5. For this reason the cloth strength in both warp and weft ways varied from 155 to 195 lb whereas the average warp way cloth strength was 182 lb and weft way cloth strength was 158.25 lb. The cloth showed a considerable high value in compression to individual yarn strength. The woven cloth with considerable high tension in the weft yarn which caused a high percentage of crimp formation in the warp yarn. The cloth was so stiff in both warp and weft direction. The cloth assistance factor in weft way was higher than warp way, indicated that the effect due to interlacing of warp and weft threads was more prominent than the effect due to extensibility in this particular direction.
