Comparison of Single and Double Nozzle Sprayers in Chemical Control of Bph

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Yield increased 14.76% over the untreated control when insecticide was applied with double nozzle sprayer during Aman season.Whereas, use of single nozzle sprayer increased the yield by 5.87% only. Research managed plots yielded 11.47% higher than the farmers managed plots. During Boro season insecticide application once in single and double nozzle treated plots effectively controlled the pest and there was an increase of 6.12% and 11.77% yield increase over farmer managed plots.

Objectives:

To select an appropriate nozzle to control BPH in farmers field farmers for controlling BPH in rice.

Methodology:

Two experiments, one each in Washin and Kanchaneswar were conducted in farmers' field during T. Aman 2012. The treatments were as follows: i) Integrated management (20 straw tepees/0.0689 ha, 04 spiders/tepee but no insecticide), ii) Use of single nozzle sprayer (need based spray at booting and flowering stage), iii) Use of double nozzle sprayer (need based spray at booting and flowering stage) and iv) Control (no measure). In Kanchaneswar, the following treatments were i) Use of single nozzle sprayer (need based spray at booting and heading stage), ii) Use of double nozzle sprayer (need based spray at booting and heading stage), iii) Farmer practices (farmers own BPH management practices) and iv) Control (no measure) Twenty four and 12 farmers each having large rice fields (approximately 0.1378 ha) were selected in the project area Washin and Kanchaneswar, respectively. Fields were selected in such a way that they remain scattered throughout the entire rice growing area of the project site. Each of the field /plot was divided in two equal halves. One portion of the field remained under the respective farmer's supervision without any intervention. The remaining portion was managed under a single component technology (researcher managed field). Each component was assigned in six farmers fields each field represent a replication at Washin and three in Kanchaneswar. In addition, each farmer maintained a plot having their own BPH management practices at Kanchaneswar. Four experiments one each in Washin, Ghargram, Dobila and Humkuria were conducted during Boro 2013 to validate the component technologies with the same treatments as describe above. Each treatment was established separately in farmers' field in all locations. Each plot was divided into three equal parts. The two terminal parts received research and farmer management practices respectively. The middle part remained as control. There were three replications for each treatment in all the locations. Thus the experiment was laid out in a RCB factorial design. Incidence of BPH was recorded by direct count from 20 randomly selected hills and using yellow sticky trap along the diagonal of each field at 10 days interval. The yields were estimated from 10 m² harvest area from each plot.

Achievement/Findings:

On-farm trial at Kanchaneswar (T.Aman) showed that when insecticide was applied with double nozzle sprayer the yield increased 14.76% over the untreated control whereas, use of single nozzle sprayer increased the yield by 5.87% only. Research managed plots yielded 11.47% higher than the farmers managed plots. However due to low infestation the difference in yield among the treatments could not be ascertained in the trial at Washin site. Incidence of planthoppers at Dobila surpassed the economic threshold level (ETL) in May during Boro season. Insecticide application once in single and double nozzle treated plots effectively controlled the pest and there was an increase of 6.12% and 11.77% yield increase over farmer managed plots. However, farmer managed plots showed a 2.62% higher yield than the integrated approach. The farmers made one to two applications of insecticides to control the hoppers, whereas, no insecticide was applied in the integrated approach. This indicates that the insecticide application is indispensable for BPH management. However, timely application with double nozzle sprayer can reduce insecticide application frequency, as well as increases yield.
