Identification of Suitable Varieties of White Jute, Tossa Jute and Kenaf for Seed Production in Non-traditional Area (salinity and Hilly) of Bangladesh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Seed is the basic input for crop production. High quality seed is the prerequisite for satisfactory crop production. Non-traditional areas like saline and hilly areas may be an alternate source for jute seed production. The preliminary study revealed that at hilly station (Khagrachori), deshi jute varieties (BJC-83, CVL-1 and BJC-7370) performed better for seed production than tossa jute and kenaf varieties. On the other hand, at saline station (both Satkhira and Patuakhili) kenaf variety HC-95 performed better for seed yield than deshi and tossa jute varieties (O-9897, OM-1, O-72 and O-795). Comparatively higher seed yield was obtained at Satkhira followed by Khagrachori station.

Objectives:

To find out the performance of seed production in non-traditional areas.

Methodology:

In Bangladesh jute seed production areas are decreasing at an alarming rate due to unavailability of land. As a result, every year a huge amount of tossa jute seeds are importing from neighboring country. There is a big zone in the hilly and coastal (saline) areas of Bangladesh where jute seed could be grown to meet the huge demand of different varieties of jute and kenaf seed. Therefore, the experiment was conducted at Khagrachori, Satkhira and Patuakhili with eight varieties of jute and kenaf to find out the performance of seed production in non-traditional areas. All varieties were sown in late July to mid August following RCBD design with three replications. Unit plot size was 4.0 m x 3.0 m = 12.0 sq.m. Space between plots and between replications was 1.0 m. Standard cultivation practices were followed.

Achievement/Findings:

Seed yield of jute and kenaf in saline areas (Satkhira and Patuakhali) was higher than hilly area (Khagrachori). Seed yield of kenaf variety HC-95 was the heighest (0.863 kg/ha). Among the deshi jute varieties, BJC-7370 gave the highest yield (0.658 kg/ha) and in case of tossa jute varieties, O-795 gave the highest seed yield (0.696 kg/ha). Therefore, variety BJC-7370 of deshi jute and variety O-795 of tossa jute are considered as the best variety of seed production in non-traditional areas (hilly and saline) of Bangladesh. Kenaf variety HC-95 is also suitable for seed production in saline zone.
