Evaluation of Diallel Crossing Materials of Kenaf in Respect of Some Important Morphological Traits Under Different Sowing Dates

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The performance of parental lines and 15 F1 hybrids were assessed and various traits were measured. ANOVA for general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) were highly significant for all the characters studied suggesting the presence of both additive and non-additive gene action for the inheritance of the concerned characters. The magnitude of GCA variance was considerably higher than that of SCA variance for days to 1st flowering, fibre weight/plant and 1000 seeds weight indicating the importance of additive gene action for these traits. For all other characters non-additive genetic effects were more important for their inheritance. Ranking of parents on GCA performance indicated that P3(Acc.2922) was the best general combiner for earliness of flowering and smaller seed size followed by P4(Acc.5030) and P2(Acc.4197), respectively. For fibre yield and yield attributes, P6(Acc.2731) was the best general combiner followed by P2(Acc.4197) and P1(CPI-72126). On the other hand, parents P2(Acc.4197) and P5(Acc.4659) were found to be the best for maximum number of seeds/fruit. On SCA performance, the cross P3 x P5 was the best for fibre related all traits except green bark thickness. This was followed by P1 x P6, P3 x P6 and P4 x P5. The crosses P2 x P3 and P3 x P4 showed maximum SCA for earliness and number of fruits/plant, while the best specific cross for smaller seed size was P2 x P4.

Objectives:

To find out promising kenaf hybrids having earliness in flowering, smaller seed size and higher fiber as well as seed yield.

Methodology:

The experiment consisted of 21 entries including 6 parents and 15 F1 progenies. Seeds were sown on two dates of sowing i.e. early (1st week of April for fibre related traits) in main field and late (mid July for seed related traits) in green house premises. Each entry was grown in double rows of 1.m length in RCBD with three replications. After plant establishment, spacing was maintained at 30 x 10 cm by thinning out week and thinner plants. The replications were interspaced with 1.0 m. Recommended standard cropping practices were followed for normal crop growth. A total of ten quantitative traits were selected for analysis. For each quantitative trait, observations were recorded from five randomly selected plants after harvest. Data were analyzed by MSTAT software and subjected to ANOVA.

Achievement/Findings:

On the basis of experimental results the crosses P3 (Acc.2922) x P5 (Acc.4659) and P4 (Acc.5030) x P5 (Acc.4659) were recommended for their higher yield potentiality. Contrary, Hybrids P2 (Acc.4197) x P3 (Acc.2922) and P2 (Acc.4197) x P4 (Acc.5030) were recommended for earliness in flowering and smaller seed size, respectively.
