Genetic Enhancement of Local Rice Germplasm Towards Aromatic Hybrid Rice Variety Development in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Bangladesh is rich in genetic resources of rice. Aromatic rice is very much popular and also being grown in small areas in most of the districts of Bangladesh. Most of the cultivated aromatic rice varieties are photosensitive and tall landrace types having low yield potentiality of 2-3t/ha (Islam, 2002). Hybrid rice research in this country has been initiated since last ten years. Development of early maturing aman hybrid rice varieties is the present demand of the farmers. Under such situation yield enhancement in aromatic rice is essential for its sustainable production as well as to compete with high yielding hybrid rice varieties. Considering demand and scope, research works on identification of component lines (A, B and R lines) from local aromatic rice germplasm for development of aromatic hybrid or quasi aromatic hybrid varieties utilizing those component lines have been initiated at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU, Gazipur). By this time 100 aromatic rice germplasm have been tested against different CMS system and thirty three (33) A and B and eleven (11) R lines have been identified. Two test quasi aromatic hybrid varieties have been identified and experimental hybrid seeds are being produced for multiplication test.

Objectives:

The following experiments were performed (titles) against each objective- 1.1. Collection of local aromatic rice germplasm from BRRI gene bank and fields. 1.2. Morphological Characterization of aromatic rice germplasm 1.3. Molecular characterization of aromatic rice germplasm 2.1. Development of source nursery 2.2. Development of test cross nursery 2.3. Development of backcross nursery 2.4. Maintenance of A, B & R lines 2.5. Purification of restorer lines 3.1. Production of experimental hybrid seed of quasi hybrid 1 and 2 3.2. Evaluation of experimental hybrids

Achievement/Findings:

•142 aromatic rice germplasm collected from BRRI Gene bank and different parts of Bangladesh. •114 aromatic rice germplasm characterized Morphologically. •DNA banding of 113 aromatic rice germplasm were assessed using 52 primers. Out of 52 primers 45 showed polymorphic bands which indicated considerable variability in the germplasm at molecular levels •112 aromatic rice germplasm were test crossed with six standard CMS lines (IR58025A, IR62829A, Gan 46A, IR62829A, IR6888A and BRRI 1A). •All the test crosses of 112 germplasm were assessed or evaluated for identification of B and R lines •40 germplasm were identified as maintainer lines against the above mentioned CMS lines and all the maintainer lines are being converted into new CMS lines through backcrossing. •13 restorer lines (Sakkorkhora R, Chinigura R, Kataribhog R, BI R, BU dhan-1 R, BRRI dhan 50, Sagordana, Baoizaki, Jirabhog, Jiradhan R, Ukhnimodhu, Jamai adury and Begun bichi, ) were identified and being maintained. •06 CMS lines; Dakshahi A, Kalijira-12 A( DA), Kalijira-12 A( IR 62), Kalijira-12 A( YouI), Kalijira-2 A, Dubsail A are being maintained through backcrossings with their corresponding B lines. •04 restorer lines (Sakkorkhora R, Chinigura R, Katarihbog R and BI R) were purified. •02 quasi aromatic hybrids (Quasi aromatic hybrid rice-1 and 2) have been developed and evaluated against local aromatic rice varieties ( BRRI dhan 34 and 38). The quasi aromatic hybrids had 0.50t/h yield and 30 days early maturity advantages over the check varieties.
