Preparation of Upazila Land and Soil Resource Utilization Guide, Charghat Upazila

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Charghat upazila lies between 24014’ and 24022’ north latitude and 88040’ and 88052’ east longitude and covers an area of 16458 ha. It lies in the physiographic unit of Ganges floodplain. The upazila comprises of 6 unions having a population of 1,86,120 (2001). Five land types namely highland, medium highland, medium lowland, low land and very low land were identified. The textural classes were sandy, loam, clay loam, clay. Eight soil groups were identified. Seven major cropping pattern were found in the upazila. Total 119 soil samples were collected and analyzed. It was found that the soils of the upazila are deficient in N, P, K, Zn and B. In each union perennial fruits, vegetables, maize pulse, oil seed crops or annual crops like sugarcane, banana and papaya can be successfully cultivated. Charghat upazila was first surveyed in 1985 and updated in 2003.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Field survey was conducted on the basis of semi-detailed soil survey method. Interpretative soil and land form map was prepared using 1:50000 aerial photographs. Soils were investigated following a catena and composite top soil samples were collected. The sampling frequency were 1 (one) sample per 200 ha. During survey, crops, cropping pattern, soil management data were collected by interviewing the farmers. Soil samples were analyzed for fertility assessment. Crop suitability for each land type was determined. Fertilizer recommendation for suitable crops was made. After compiling physical and chemical data sets the land and soil resource utilization guide was prepared.

Charghat upazila is situated in the south-eastern part of Rajshahi district. It lies under the AEZ No. 11 (Ganges River Floodplain) AEZ No. 10 (Active Ganges River Floodplain). In this upazila major land type recognized was highland comprising 57% of total area followed by medium highland comprising 16% of the total area. Major textural class identified was loam covering 65% of total area followed by clay loam (6%) and clay (5%). Eight soil groups were identified namely, Sara, Rayna, Gopalpur, Iswardi, Sukdevpur, Mehendiganj, Ganges sandy alluvium and Ganges silty alluvium. In highland Sara and Iswardi covers major area while in medium highland Gopa lpur and Iswardi covers major area. According to local agro ecology suitable crop identified were wheat, onion, garlic lentil, cheek pea, chili, sugarcane, transplanted aus rice(HYV/Local), jute mustard, soybean, muskmelon, kharif and rabi ground nut, rabi vegetables, millets, barley, cabbage, mungbean, sapota and papaya. Broadcast aus rice(HYV/Local), transplanted aman rice(HYV), mungbean, cauliflower, snake gourd, tomato, watermelon, cotton, pineapple, coconut and betel nut were identified as moderately suitable. Seven major cropping patterns namely Mago/Jackfruit/Date; Banana/Papaya; Sugarcane; Rabi crops (wheat/onion/potato)-Fallow/Sesame-Transplanted Aman (TA); Boro-Fallow/Sesame/Jute-TA; Potato/Mustard-Boro-TA/Fallow; Boro-Fallow were identified. Fertilizer recommendations for suitable crops are given in the guide. This guide can be used for determining flood, drought, landslide, soil erosion, river bank erosion. Demonstration site selection for technology transfer and local level development planning can be done with the help of this guide. Upazila land and soil resources carrying capacity can be estimated which would help in determining food deficit or surplus of the area.
