Yield and Yield Components of Rapeseed-mustard as Affected by De-branching

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of different levels of de-branching on seed yield and yield components of Brassica species. One rapeseed variety (Dhali) and two mustard varieties (Daulat and Varuna) and three levels of de-branching (no de-branching i.e., control, de- branching at basal half and de-branching at apical half) were tested. The basal half de-branching (BHD) treatment increased the seed yield in all the three varieties of rapeseed- mustard. Comparing with control, the BHD treatment resulted in 10%, 22% and 24% higher seed yield in Dhali, Daulat and Varuna respectively. In BHD seed yield increased mainly due to increased number of siliquae per plant. In Daulat and Varuna, it was also observed that the contribution of secondary branches on seed yield was greater due to BHD. On the other hand, seed yield was drastically reduced due to apical half de-branching. The results indicate that all the branches are not equally productive and branches on basal nodes increase the wastage of assimilates. However, it may be suggested that the seed yield of mustard could be improved by selecting plant type with dormant basal shoot and dominant apical branches.

Objectives:

To investigate the effect of removal of unproductive branches on seed yield of rapeseed- mustard varieties.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong during 1995-1996. One rapeseed variety (Dhali) and two mustard varieties (Daulat and Varuna) with three de-branching levels viz., control (no de-branching), apical half de-branching (AHD) and basal half de-branching (BHD) constituted the treatments. Division of each plant into apical and basal half was determined on the basis of total number of nodes on the main stem at 50% flowering. The experiment was laid out in a factorial RCB design with three replications. The experimental land was fertilized with 100-80-60-30 kg of N, P₂O₅, K₂O and S per hectare. Seeds were sown on 14 November 1995 apart in rows at 30 cm and 10 cm in plant to plant. The intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. From each plot, 10 plants were selected at random and tagged on same day of flowering. At 50% flowering, de-branching were then imposed as per treatment on selected plants. The treated and control plants were allowed to grow in normal competition until maturity. Data on yield and yield components were collected from treated 10 plants at harvest and analyzed statistically.

It also appears here that branches arising from the apical nodes were the dominant contributors to the seed yield. By reducing the interplant competition, removal of basal branches might have facilitated the apical siliquae to contribute to the increasing yield. On the contrary, such compensation was absent in seed-yield following apical branch removal. As a consequence to AHD, the restricted contribution from apical nodes to the basal nodes probably resulted in reduced seed yield. However, BHD increased the availability of assimilates to the apical nodes which promoted to produce more siliquae and consequently higher seed yield. So it can be concluded that the seed yield of rapeseed- mustard could be improved by selecting plant type with dormant basal shoot and dominant apical branches.
