Thirty six accessions of pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata) were evaluated at PGRC. Qualitative variations were observed in leaf size, leaf lobes, leaf pubescence (dorsal and ventral) ,flower colour, stem and blossom end, fruit shape, fruit ribs, predominant fruit skin colour, flesh and seed colour and seed surface. The highest qualitative variation was found in fruit shape. Qualitative variation were predominantly present in leaf size, leaf lobes, stem and fruit shape, fruit ribs, flesh colour, seed surface among the accessions. The accessions produced 1st male and female flower in 79 to 95 days and 88 to 99 days, respectively. Fruit length, breadth and weight were ranged from 12.25 to 25.66 cm, 13.53 to 23.50 cm and 1.48 to 4.32kg, respectively. The accessions were produced 2 to 7 fruits and 5.13 to 19.50 kg fruits per plant. The accessions were exhibited 5.67 to 11.67% sugar content and 38 to144 β-carotene (µ g/100g). The maximum coefficient of variation was found in β-carotene (33.01%), followed by yield per plant (24.8%) and the minimum in days to first female flowering (3.14%). Unique selection and trait information is available within the population studied which may offer crop improvement opportunity.

(i) To study the genetic variability, (ii) To identify salient features that distinguish accessions from one another, (iii) To determine sugar content and β carotene for quality trait information (iv) To identify the promising accessions for varietal development (v) To increase seeds for conservation.

The experiment was carried out with 36 accessions of pumpkin Germplasm at PGRC, BARI during 2005-06. The poly bag raised seedlings were transplanted in the prepared pit on 4 th December, 2005. The distance between plant to plant and row to row was 4 m respectively in RCBD design with 3 replications. Optimum cultural practices were followed in pumpkin production system. Data were recorded on 22 qualitative and 15 quantitative traits as per Cucurbitaceae descriptor (IBPGR). Passport information and descriptor was explained as per documentation style developed PGRC, BARI.

Fruit shape was globular, flattened, oblong, elliptical, heart and pyriform. Small, intermediate and large leaf, and shallow, intermediate and deep leaf lobes were observed. Intermediate to high leaf pubescence in dorsal and ventral side were found. Yellow and orange flowers were observed. Stem end fruit shape was depressed, flattened and round but blossom end fruit shape was depressed with flattened. Superficial, intermediate and deep fruit ribs were observed. Predominant fruit skin color was green and cream, and secondary fruit skin color was green. Light to dark orange and yellow flesh color, and white, off-white and cream- seed color were observed among the accessions. Seed surface such as smooth, wrinkled and slightly pitted were observed. All accessions were shown light green hypocotyle and epicotyle, angular stem shape, branched tendril, reniform leaf shape, dented leaf margin, prostrate growth habit and monoecious sex type. Days to opening of 1st male and female flower from 79 to 88 days and 95 to 99 days, respectively. The highest length of main vine was in BD-2203 (6.41 m) and the number of fruits in BD-2177 (7). Fruit length and breadth ranged from 12.25 to 25.66 cm and 13.53 to 23.50 cm, respectively. Maximum fruit weight, 4.32 kg was found in BD-2174. Flesh thickness and cavity diameter were ranged from 2.12 to 3.32 cm and 9.29 cm to 17.55 cm, respectively. The highest (9.50 kg) and the lowest (5.13 kg) yield were obtained from BD-2177 and BD-4588, respectively. The sugar content ranged from 5.67 to 11.67% from BD-2157 and BD-2237, respectively. The highest β carotene (144 µ g) was obtained from the accession BD-7350, followed by 143 µ g (BD-7352, BD-2150) and 139µ g (BD-2157, BD-4589, BD-264).The highest CV% was noted in β carotene (33.01%) and the lowest in days to first female flowering (3.14%).
