Nutrient Requirement for Two New Rice Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The requirement of NPK was determined by SSNM techniques. Two promising Boro lines –AS 996 and BRRIdhan 29-SC3-28-16-4-HR2 compared to CK BRRIdhan 28 and BR 14. Nutrient management x genotype interaction showed significant effect on yield. Site specific nutrient management (SSNM) showed NPK requirements of 104, 0 and 86 kg/ha in AS 966 and 101, 3 and 62 kg/ha in BRRIdhan 29-SC3-28-16-4-HR2.

Objectives:

To determined the requirement of the major nutrients – nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium –through site-specific nutrient management technique for rice production

Methodology:

Requirement of the major nutrients – nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium – were determined through site-specific nutrient management technique for two promising Boro lines – AS9996 and BRRI dhan29-SC3-28-16-4-HR2 compared to BRRI dhan28 and BR14. Sixty-five-day old seedlings of four rice genotypes were transplanted on February 03, 2010 at BRRI farm, Gazipur. Four nutrient management treatments were tested – NPK, - N, - P, and - K. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design, assigning nutrient treatment in the main plot and variety in the sub-plot. The NPK plots received 150 kg N, 15 kg P and 100 kg K/ha, respectively. The experiment had unit plot size of 5 × 2 m and the harvest area for grain and straw yields was 5 m² and 0.64 m², respectively.

Achievement/Findings:

Nutrient management x genotype showed significant interaction effect on grain yield and harvest index. Both the nutrient management and genotype showed significant effect on the yield, however, the interaction effect of nutrient management and genotype was not significant. Receiving NPK treatment the tested genotype AS996 and BRRI dhan29-SC3-28-16-4-HR2 gave 4.33 and 4.24 t/ha compared to 4.11 t/ha in 3.57 t/ha in BRRI dhan28 and BR14, respectively. A reasonable low yield in all the tested genotypes may be attributed to old seedling of 65 days and delay transplanting. However, omission of nitrogen significantly reduced yield compared to NPK treatment in all the genotypes. The yield in – N treatment was similar in all the four genotypes (1.89 – 2.01 t/ha). Omission of P reduced grain yield insignificantly in BRRI dhan29-SC3-28-16-4-HR2, BRRI dhan28 and BR14, but AS996 showed similar grain yield both in NPK and - P treatment. A significant yield reduction due to potassium omission was found in all the tested genotypes. The site-specific nutrient management calculation showed the N, P and K requirement of 104, 0 and 86 kg/ha, respectively in AS996 and 101, 3 and 62 kg/ha, respectively, in BRRI dhan29-SC3-28-16-4-HR2. The check variety BRRI dhan28 had the calculated N, P and K requirement of 100, 1 and 48 and that of BR14 was 74, 3 and 62 kg/ha, respectively. Timely transplanting of the tested genotypes with younger seedling would increase rice yield in NPK treatment and consequently the doses of N and K would be increased.
