In long- term missing element study, rice yield significantly reduced due to omission of N fertilizer during T.Aman 2009 while in Boro 2010, omission of P and K drastically reduced grain yield even than in N omitted plots. During Boro season, applied organic materials (CD, PM, DS, MOC and MM in omitted plots of PK, SZn, KSZn, PSZn and PKSZn grain yield was slightly increased than all nutrient omitted plots

To monitor the changes of the soil fertility status due to fertilizer addition/omission and organic source addition.

The experiment was initiated on a permanent layout at the BRRI farm Gazipur in 1985 Boro season viewing missing element approach using 12 treatments in RCB design with 4 replications. Since Boro 2000, each plot was split to include a reverse treatment, and additional varieties, BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan31 to evaluate the reverse trends of missing elements. In Boro season NPKSZn @ 120-25-35-20-5 kg/ha was used but in T.Aman season it was 100-25-35-20-5 kg/ha. Again in Boro 2009, organic materials were used as third modification in this experiment. The STB dose of NPKS was 138-10-80-5 kg ha-1 and 100-10-80-5 kg/ha-1. The rate was calculated from complete treatment soils after 47th crop using Fertilizer Guide-2005 (BARC, 2005) with a yield target of 7.5 t/ha and 6.5t/ha. In this STB dose, K fertilizer required more than double of previous K dose. Urea N was applied in three 3 equal splits i.e. 1/3 at final land preparation, 1/3 at active tillering stage and 1/3 at 5-7 days before PI stage. Rest of the fertilizers was applied at final land preparation.

The grain yield significantly reduced due to omission of N fertilization during T.Aman 2009. Whereas, in Boro 2010, omission of K and P drastically reduced grain yield even than in N omitted plots. Among the organic materials poultry manure performed better than other sources. It was found that when addition of complete fertilizers dose in absolute fertilizer control also produced the yield of both varieties and equivalent to continuously fertilized plots. Initial six years average (1985-1990) results of grain yield indicated that the percent fertilizer contribution to total grain yield was 36 % and that of soil was 64%. However, the fertilizer contribution to total grain yield increased to 40% over the next decade under the same fertilization system. The N balance was negative. About 243-917 kg N/ha appeared to have been removed in excess of the amounts added for 14 crops. The higher amount of N, 917 kg/ha was removed from the N missing plot. Quite large amounts of P, S and Zn accumulated in the fertilized plots. But K was removed in large amounts (247-890 kg/ha) of the amount added as fertilizer. Long-term effect of complete fertilizers (NPKSZn) and missing of a nutrient from complete fertilized and unfertilized situation revealed that continuous cropping without fertilizer decreased all available nutrients including organic matter compare to initial soil of the experiment with a exception of S. Sulfur fertilization (20 kg ha-1crop-1) also improves the available S level in soil. On the other hand, P fertilization @ 25 kg ha-1crop-1 build up available P in soil, but when P was not applied, the available P level in soil decreased in the same way of unfertilized plot. But, incase of K fertilization @ 35 kg ha-1crop-1, the depletion of exchangeable K level in soil was observed.
