Prof. Dr. Md. Golam Rasul
Professor
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University(BSMRAU), Salna, Gazipur 1706, Bangladesh

The project on Survey and Collection of Plant Genetic Resources (PGR) of coastal belts of Bangladesh was undertaken to know the existing scenario of overall agriculture. Survey revealed that 73 local rice varieties have been abandoned or on the verge of extinct or extinct might be due to low yield or susceptible to diseases or may be choice of local people. A sum total of 1645 PGRs of 81 crops have been collected. Among them, rice germplasm was predominant (303) followed by country bean (100), sweet gourd (77), Stem amaranth (68), Yard long bean (68), Indian spinach (64), Red amaranth (60) Bottle gourd (59), snake gourd (59) etc. About 857 accessions of 32 crops were regenerated in the BSMRAU during 2011-13, of which 656 accessions of 17 crops were characterized using IPGRI and IRRI/ BRRI descriptors. One set of regenerated germplasm (310 nos.) was given to GRSD, BRRI for future research and long term conservation, Genomic DNA of 602 accessions of 13 crops were so far isolated in duplicate (two set for each accession) and preserved at -20°C for molecular fingerprinting. A regional workshop with 80 participants on importance, conservation and use of PGR was also conducted.

To collect available plant genetic resources from coastal regions • To document the passport information of each collected germplasm and document indigenous knowledge about their cultivation and use • To provide training on plant genetic resources involving local communities for conservation in on-farm system and utilization

A questionnaire for survey and a Passport Information Data sheet for collection of germplasm was prepared. These two documents were approved by the Advisory Committee of the project. Exploration and collection team for genetic resources collection (consisting Senior Scientist, Scientific Officer of the project and sub-assistant Agricultural Officer of respective upazillas) was formed. 12 Upazilla from seven district of the exposed coastal region were randomly selected covering entire coastal region from Stakhira to Cox's Bazar. This selection was made based on past PGRs collection history of Public organizations, salinity level high (8-16ds/m), where intrusion of saline water is frequent, areas embraces the sea directly and is subject to be affected by the anticipated sea level rise. Some new areas (8 upazilla) were included in the 2nd year for farmers training and collection of germplasm to make widen and broaden the base of plant genetic resources thereby to capture more available genetic variability among the collections and to disseminate them. Major activities are- A. Survey in the project areas B. Training of farmers in the coastal areas C. Collection of Plant Genetic Resources/Germplasm D. Regeneration/Seed multiplication and characterization of the collected germplasm E. Seed conservation and distribution

• Survey information depicted that agriculture is completely replaced by shrimp culture and saIt production in some parts of coastal region. Rice was the predominat crop in rainy season. Farmers grow vegetable in their homestead and backyards for own consumption. • A day long training program on 'importance on the. conservation and utilization of local germplasm of different crops and their wild relatives" had been imparted among 357 farmers of 20 upazilla of nine districts in the coastal belts. • A total of 1645 plant genetic resources of different crops were collected for two years. Out of 1359 accessions of 32 different crops set for regeneration, a total of 857 germplasm were regenerated at BSMRAU research farm. About 656 accessions of 17 crops were characterized as per descriptor of IPGRI, BRRI. • A sum of 310 (Three hundred ten) rice germplasm donated to Bangladesh Rice Research Institute for further characterization, long term preservation and commencing research for the national interest. Genomic DNA of 602 accessions of 13 crops were isolated in duplicate and preserved at -20°C. • A regional workshop was organized to have more interaction regarding exchange of ideas and views on importance and conservation and use of plant genetic resources among stakeholders, researchers and extension people in Khulna region in September, 2012.
