The Effect of Gypsum on the Production of Tea

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Sulphur is taken up by plants from the soil solution as SO₄ 2-. It is then reduced to amino acids and converted to proteins. Supply of sulphur is essential for protein synthesis, again when the supply is ample; the rate of uptake exceeds the rate of reduction and assimilation into proteins and other organic compounds with the results that accumulates in the tissues. Sulphur and nitrogen deficiencies have profound and similar effect on growth of plants. Sulphur is an important constituent of amino acids. Proteins and enzymes take part in oxidation-reduction reactions in plants. Sulphur nutrition was not considered previously due to continuous use of ammonium sulphate in tea. Recently ammonium sulphate application is discontinued and urea is being used as the source of nitrogen. Gypsum is being the cheapest source.

Treatments: 7, Replication:3, Design: RBD, Total no of plots: 21, Treatment combination: T₁= Control+ usual fertilizer application, T₂= 20kg/ha gypsum+ usual fertilizer application, T₃= 40kg/ha gypsum+ usual fertilizer application, T₄= 60 kg/ha gypsum+ usual fertilizer application, T₅ = 80 kg/ha gypsum + usual fertilizer application, T₆ = 100 kg/ha gypsum + usual fertilizer application, T₇ = 120 kg/ha gypsum + usual fertilizer application Regular weekly yield data were recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

Result shows that gypsum application has no significant effect on the yield of tea. But it shows some positive response at the lower rate (T₂=40 kg/ha) of gypsum application. But negative response has been noted with higher rates of gypsum application
