Characterization of Mesta (hibiscus Sabdariffa) Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Jute Agriculture Experimental Station, Manikganj to characterize of twelve mesta germ plasm collected from different sources were sown on 15 April, 2001 along with the check variety HS-24. The experiment was sown in a mini plot of 3 meter length of 5 rows for each accession. Row to row distance was 30 and plant to plant distance was 5-6 cm in rows. The unit plot size was 3m x 1.2 m for each accession and plot to plot distance was 1 meter. Pigmentation data were collected at 60 days after sowing. Plants were harvested at 120 days after sowing and post harvest data were collected. The accessions were characterized for their morph-agronomic attributes as per Hibiscus descriptor. Based on the major yield contributing characters viz. technical height, leaf angle, leaf length, leaf width, petiole length, node number, base diameter of stem, middle diameter of stem, top diameter of stem, core diameter, dry fiber weight and dry stick weight accessions no. 4904, 4910, 4906 and 4905 performed better than the check variety HS-24.

Objectives:

To characterize some of germ plasm as per Hibiscus Descriptor for their morpho-agronomic attributes

Methodology:

The experiment was sown in a mini plot of 3 meter length of 5 rows for each accession. Row to row distance was 30 and plant to plant distance was 5-6 cm in rows. The unit plot size was 3m x 1.2 m for each accession and plot to plot distance was 1 meter. The accessions were sown on 15 April, 2001 with check variety HS-24. Other standard cultural and intercultural practices were followed. Pigmentation data were collected at 60 days after sowing. Plants were harvested at 120 days after sowing and post harvest data were collected. Eleven mesta accessions viz. 4599, 4601, 4602, 4600, 4904, 4905, 4906, 4907, 4910, 4911 and 4918 were characterized with check variety HS-24.
