Preliminary Yield Trial of Intraspecific Hybrid Derivatives of Smooth Mesta Strains

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Under this experiment sixteen progenies of Mesta (L-34-B-3/96, L-71-B-3/96, L-75-B-3/96, L-77-B-3/96, L-78-B-3/96, L-79-B-3/96, L-80-B-3/96, L-82-B-3/96, L-86-B-3/96, L-87-B-3/96, L-88-B-3/96, L-89-B-3/96, L-92-B-3/96, L-96-B-3/96, L-134-B-3/96 and L-138-B-3/96 )and a check variety HS-24 were grown at two regional stations JAES, Manikganj and Faridpur to study their yield and yield attributes. None of the progeny out yielded than the control HS-24 at both the stations. But 5 plants were selected from Faridpur. The smoothness and early maturing characteristics are of great importance in mesta breeding as to fit this crop with suitable cropping patterns

Objectives:

To evolve an early maturing mesta having smooth plants and also more biomass in comparison to recommended cultivar per unit time and area.

Methodology:

A study was conducted with sixteen progenies of Mesta (L-34-B-3/96, L-71-B-3/96, L-75-B-3/96, L-77-B-3/96, L-78-B-3/96, L-79-B-3/96, L-80-B-3/96, L-82-B-3/96, L-86-B-3/96, L-87-B-3/96, L-88-B-3/96, L-89-B-3/96, L-92-B-3/96, L-96-B-3/96, L-134-B-3/96 and L-138-B-3/96 )and a check variety HS-24 at two regional stations viz. Faridpur and JAES, Manikganj to study their yield and yield attributes. These progenies were grown in 2 rows of 3 meter length in each replication. At the age of 120 days, data were recorded on days to first flowering, plant population, plant height, base diameter, green weight, fibre weight and stick weight. Standard agronomic practices were followed for uniform growth.

Achievement/Findings:

Sixteen intraspecific hybrid progenies of smooth mesta was raised at Manikganj and Faridpur. Necessary data were taken. None of the hybrid progenies out-yielded the control HS-24 at both the stations. But 5 plants were selected from Faridpur. The smoothness and early maturing characteristics are of great importance in mesta breeding as to fit this crop with suitable cropping patterns
