Studies on Chemical Modification (pretreatment) of Jute Fabric with Various Dyes by Cross-linking Techniques.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted during the year 1999-2000 at Bangladesh Jute Research Institute, Dhaka, Chemical Processing Department to study on the chemical modification of jute fabric with various dyes. For chemical modification of jute fabrics with various dyes using cross-linking agents along with other auxiliaries 50 meters of CBC was procured and desized, scoured, and bleached. Chemical composition and some physical parameters of the fabrics were also determined.

Objectives:

To develop and standardize economical dyeing and finishing process technology for jute fabric applying various cross-linking techniques to use various dyes, cross-linking agents along with other auxiliaries and to improve fabric quality resulting high fabric resiliency, brilliant shade, high fastness property, increase productivity, saving water, energy and time and lower cost.

Methodology:

In order to carry out the whole experiment throughout the year the required amount of Carpet Backing Cloth (CBC) was procured. The fabric was first desized, scoured and bleached with 10% hydrogen peroxide (50%, 100 vol) 6% sodium silicate, 2% sodium carbonate and 1% Nekanil-LN (% is based on the weight of fabric). Bleaching was carried out at temperature of 90⁰C for one hour in Jigger machine. The fabric was washed thoroughly with water and died in Stenter machine. Thus the experimental samples of the fabric were prepared. The specification of the fabric (weight, hemicellulose, lignin) crease recovery angle, tensile strength, abrasion resistance of the bleached samples were determined.

Achievement/Findings:

Jute occupied a world market for quite a long time because of its unique properties like- high strength, rough handling advantage, environment friendly, easily degradable etc. Once it was the only single biggest foreign currency earner of the country. Despite the conventional uses of the commodity is being reduced and facing severe challenges from products made from synthetics and allied fibers for the last three decades. So, non-conventional products are sought in wider fields at present. In this regards BJRI has manufactured some sophisticated products such as furnishing fabrics, blankets, sweaters etc. from the jute for diversification. Such attempts need improvements of associated drawbacks of jute products in various ways that makes them popular to the general people. The chemical modification of jute fabric with various dyes in presence of cross-linking agents and other auxiliaries may be one of them.
