Screening of Kenaf and Mesta Genetic Resources for Stress Tolerance

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out at JAES, Manikganj in 2007. The materials were sown in three meters lengh and two lines for each germplasm following RCBD method. It was observed that root-knot nematode attacks Kenaf plant mostly in August-September and not a single accession was free from nematode attack while mesta accessions were free from root-knot nematode attack. On the other hand, none accession of Kenaf and Mesta were affected by spiral borer.

Objectives:

1) To select genotypes for high yielding and desirable traits from gene bank collection.

2) To find out any germ plasm which is diseases and pest resistant from collected gene bank.

Methodology:

Thirty Kenaf and 15 Mesta accessions and check varieties HC-2, HC-95, BJRI Kenaf-3 and HS-24 were grown at JAES, Manikganj during the year 2007 having 2 lines of 3m long row. Proper intercultural operation and standard agronomic practices were followed for uniform growth. After 45 days of plant age 2-3 plants from each row were up rooted at 15 days interval and examined for root-knot nematode infestations.

Achievement/Findings:

From this study, it was observed that root-knot nematode attacks kenaf plant mostly in August – September and not a single accession was free from nematode attack while mesta accessions were free from root-knot nematode attack. On the other hand, none accession of kenaf and mesta were affected by spiral borer.
