Regional Characterization of Kenaf (h. Cannabinus L.) for Yield and Yield Contributing Characters

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Jute Agriculture Experimental Station, Manikganj and Jute Research Regional Station, Kishoreganj to characterize of fifteen accessions of kenaf germplasm collected from different sources were sown on 31 March, 1994 along with the check variety HC-2. The experiment was sown in a mini plot of 3 meter length of 5 rows for each accession. Row to row distance was 30 and plant to plant distance was 5-6 cm in rows. The unit plot size was 3m x 1.2 m for each accession and plot to plot distance was 1 meter. Pigmentation data were collected at 60 days after sowing. The accessions were characterized for their morph-agronomic attributes as per Hibiscus descriptor. Plants were harvested at 120 days after sowing and post harvest data were collected. Based on the major yield contributing characters viz. technical height, leaf angle, leaf length, leaf width, petiole length, node number, base diameter of stem, middle diameter of stem, top diameter of stem, core diameter, dry fibre weight and dry stick weight DS/024H, PI-376260, EV-41, CPI-72126, CPI-61000, PI-346771, 346771, CPI-78891, PI-376260 and CPI-61000 performed better than the rest of the accessions and the check variety.

Objectives:

To characterize some of kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) germplasm as per Hibiscus Descriptor for their morpho-agronomic attributes.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Jute Agriculture Experimental Station, Manikganj and Jute Research Regional Station, Kishoreganj to characterize of fifteen accessions of kenaf germplasm collected from different sources were sown on along with the check variety HC-2. Fifteen accessions of kenaf germplasm collected from different sources along with check variety HC-2 were sown on 31 March, 1994. The materials under study were accession DS/024H, DS/025H, BL/088H, PI-376260, PI-375260, EV-41, G-45, CPI-72126, CPI-72126, CPI-61000, PI-343136, CPI-7211, PI-346771, CPI-72103 and CPI-78891. The unit plot size for each accession was 5 rows of 3 m length, spacing 30 cm between rows and 5-7 cm between plants and 1 m between plots. Standard cultural practices were followed. Pigmentation data on stem colour, leaf colour, vain colour, petiole colour, stipule colour, bud colour, and fruit colour were collected at 60 days after sowing. Plants were harvested at 120 days after sowing and post harvest data on plant height, node number, base diameter of stem, middle diameter of stem, top diameter of stem, core diameter, dry fibre weight and dry stick weight were collected. The data were analyzed following standard statistical procedures.
