A two year field experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong to evaluate the yield and profitability of maize accommodating radish as inter crop and yard long bean as relay crop under single and paired rows of maize. All crops produced the highest yields in sole cultivation. Maize grain yield was reduced significantly in different inter crop combinations in both years. In two years average, maize vegetables inter crops produced 71 to 121% higher maize equivalent yield and 24 to 56% higher land equivalent ratio over mono culture of maize. The highest maize equivalent yield and land equivalent ratio were recorded using radish inter crop and then relaying of yard long bean with single row maize. However, the maximum monetary benefit was obtained from single row maize and radish inter cropping in 1995-96 and by adding relay crop of yard long bean was found to give greater monetary benefit in 1996-97. The results of the study indicated that simultaneous growing of 80% radish and subsequently relaying of 50% yard long bean in a recommended row spacing of maize gives more benefit compared to either or the crops in mono culture.

To evaluate the yield performance and monetary advantage of maize and radish inter cropping then relaying of yard long bean under single and paired rows of maize.

During 1985-96 and 1996-97 at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong, the field experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Seven different treatments were evaluated such as (i) Sole maize (Var. Barnali), (ii) Sole radish (Var. Tasaki), (iii) Sole yard long bean (Var. Local), (iv) Single row maize + radish, (v) Paired row maize + radish,(vi) Single row maize + radish/yard long bean and (vii) Paired row maize + radish/yard long bean. The maize was planted at two crop geometric, i.e. single row and paired rows. In single row maize, row to row spacing was 75 em and in paired rows it was 100 cm, Between two single rows and paired rows of maize two and four rows of radish were sown, respectively. A common dose of fertilizer 160-60-40 kg of N, P2O5 and K2O per hectare was applied for both in sole maize and maize with first inter crop (radish). The sole radish was fertilized with 170-70-130 kg of N, P2O5 and K2O per hectare following recommended management practices. In maize, full amount of TSP and MP and one third of urea were applied as basal and rest of urea was side dressed in two splits at sole maize and three splits at inter crop maize. Maize and radish were sown during second week of November in both the years. The crops were irrigated three times. Radish was harvested at 50-55 days after sowing in both first and second year. During 1995-96 yard long bean seeds were sown immediately after harvest of radish and during 1996-97 poly bag seedlings of yard long bean were transplanted after silking of maize. The population of yard long bean was 50% of its mono culture both in single and paired rows of maize. Yard long bean was fertilized with 20-70-90 kg of N, P2O5 and K2O per hectare as basal. Relayed bean plants were allowed to climb on maize plants while bamboo sticks were used for to supports the sole yard long bean. The crops were sprayed twice with Ripcord @ 1 ml/litre. The harvesting of maize was done during mid April both in first and second year. Several harvesting were done for yard long bean and harvesting was completed by first week of June, The data on yield attributing characters of all crops were collected from randomly selected ten plants. The marketable yield of each crop, input and labor cost and price of product were recorded for mono culture and mixture. The data were analyzed statistically and the mean differences were adjudged with LSD test.

Results of the present study indicated that the productivity and profitability of maize could be increased by different intercrop combinations. Simultaneous inter cropping of radish followed by relaying with yard long bean with single row maize was found more profitable than that of paired row maize.
